  • Personal sacrifice

Nominate 5 people who in your opinion have made the greatest personal sacrifices in order to obtain improved conditions for others, throughout history. Then we can have a 12-options poll between the ones with the most nominations.

    I nominate:

Nelson Mandela (decades-long incarceration for his opposition to a regime which he was ultimately instrumental in bringing down, followed by superior efforts towards national reconciliation)

Martin Luther King, Jr. (who knew that his campaign for civil rights would ultimately lead to his assassination)

Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Somalia-born Dutch politician and advocate for women's rights, now in political exile in the U.S., author of the manuscript for Submission, a short subject movie for which director Theo van Gogh was subsequently murdered. She has not wavered in her criticism of Islam and its practices and effects on society, despite severe threats being made against her personal safety)

Mother Teresa (dedicated herself to a life in powerty, and to helping improve conditions and bring comfort to the disadvantaged, the poor and the marginalized masses)

Jesus of Nazareth (sacrificed himself in order to bring hope of salvation to millions, even across the span of millennia)

Andrei Sakharov is a man who would definitely also qualify, but I decided to limit the nominations to five, so I will have to leave him out. I hope someone else will nominate him.

Gandhi. Put his own life on the line repeatedly with his protest fasts to get the British to leave India and to stop Muslims and Hindus from butchering each other, and to oppose Ambedkar's demand for separate electorates for different castes.

        I was waiting for Ghandi.

To that add the birthday boy, Abraham Lincoln.

Gandhi vs. Jesus. Has Southpark done that yet?

Could I ask you to bold your actual nominations, to aid in distinguishing nominations from other mentions, comments and so on?

And remember, the number of nominations is added up, so name the five you would most like to see included in the poll, even if they have already been nominated.

I agree that Gandhi is a good choice, by the way.

                    The other four:

The Buddha (renounced the throne, renounced power, renounced wealth, renounced everything, in order to preach the Way to the End of Suffering)

Mahavir (the same as the Buddha, only he was the last Tirthankara of Jainism)

Acharya Chanakya (dedicated his entire lifetime, since the beginning of his childhood, to create a united India, to bring an end to the inter-Janapada wars)

                    Anwar Sheikh
