There's no way I would ever nominate Mother Theresa there. Sacrificed to not gather so much money to herself? That's not a sacrifice, that's just a career choice. Not only that, but her deeds are not exactly clear cut GOOD either.

Maybe she can marry Gandhi, adn they can both destroy the world with their good will. Reincarnation of the devil would be their child.

But others on WInston's list are decent IMO, if you figure Jesus did what is written.

HMhhh.. personal sacrifice. I can't say anyone in particular. Lots of people have sacrificed their lives and were fully aware of the consequences.
    In da butt.

Well, we need this option in any poll...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

I'm rather uncomfortable with Mother Teresa's VERY questionable methods pertaining to religious conversion (exploiting the fact that a child's father is on his deathbed to try to convert that child, and other stuff like that), though I do applaud her charity work. But there are many other people who have done much more, so I don't know whether or not to include her in the "Top Five".

I agree with Winston pretty much.
I would also nominate Lech Walesa and Joan of Arc.

Naw, he just thinks he's funny.

I agree with Jesus, Gandhi and Buddha.

I'm going to add an unexpected one: George Washington. His turning down of the Crown of America kept democratic republicanism from being stangled in its crib.

I'm having trouble coming up with a fifth. I thought of Becket, St. Thomas More and Mohammed Ali, but although they sacraficed a lot, not much changed--like Joan of Arc. Then there's people like Andrew Carnegie, who used his own funds to build libraries all across America which had a huge effect, but it wasn't that much of a sacrafice, 'cause he had millions. Likewise Bill Gates' recent contribution to charity. St. Paul gave up a lot to help Christianity get its feet under itself, but he's just a latter-day poorer copy of Christ.

I said this earlier, but I'm changing my mind...
I guess I'll go with Davy Crockett, who gave up celebrity and a reasonably comfortable life in Tennessee to head south to Texas and his suicide stand at the Alamo. This became the rallying cry of the Texas Rebellion from Mexico and the defeat of Santa Ana. Later border conflicts with Santa Ana led to the Mexican War, which grabbed essentially all of the American southwest for the U.S.
I'm going to go with Rousseau instead.

I'd expected more interest in this..

Number of nominations considered to be serious, tallied towards entry into the poll so far,

                2 - Buddha
                2 - Jesus of Nazareth
                1 - Ayaan Hirsi Ali
                1 - Jeanne d'Arc
                1 - Acharya Chanakya
1 - Martin Luther King, Jr.
                1 - Abraham Lincoln
                1 - Mahavir
                1 - Nelson Mandela
                1 - Mother Teresa
                1 - Ronald W. Reagan
                1 - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

                1 - Lech Walesa
                1 - George Washington

My votes go to Elton John. How he avoided a lavish, extravagant lifestyle at all costs to be true to his fans. And even with the sheer austerity he has had to endure, he still says it's 'no sacrifice, no sacrifice at all'. He's my hero
