Actually there are solid reasons for why programming boards emphasize grammar and spelling -- because good programmers are grammatical and spelling nazis when it comes to programming languages.

KH, while I was an economics major, I took poli sci, sociology, and anthro, and I was and am quite sure that they address important issues in the study of society that econ alone cannot. While there is, more thats silly produced in those fields then in economics or the hard sciences, there are gems that cannot be found anywhere else.

There is also very important quantitative work found in all of them. One of the key works that started sociology as a field was Durkheims suicide, a cross national study of the incidence of suicide, that found, counter intuitively, that suicides, while higher in times of economic decline than economic stability, are ALSO higher in times of rapid economic growth than in times of economic stability. From which, along with some other data, he developed some important concepts about how humans relate to the society around them.

Which is not to say that the only important work in the study of society is quantitative.

I've said several serious things in this thread. I've deliberately overstated my actual beliefs in order to provide a level of levity in an already silly discussion. I've also said certain things I don't believe at all (for the same reason).

Your mission, should you choose to acept it, is to apply critical thinking skills, along with prior knowledge of my stances on several issues as well as my relationship with certain poly posters in order to disentangle these different threads of conversation.

I personally think that this thread is about technical people feeling inadaquate when it comes to social settings so they attempt to make fun of those that are.
