Here (Croatia) flats are normally 10 times salary. What people do is buy a flat only when they pair up for real. Then one salary is used almost entirely to pay off the apartment, while the couple lives off the other one for years.

We've got a chronic housing shortage and low interest rates. Thinking back to your economics studies and the rules of supply and demand, when do you think the peak will be reached?

Next time I feel like whining about the housing market here, I'll try to remember this thread. Yeesh.

Property prices are rising faster over the Irish Sea than they are here. Anyway, there's a net influx of migrants to Britain.

Why bother building? There are over 800,000 habitable-yet-empty houses in Britain. All it would take is a spot of forward-thinking legislation, and the housing problem will be (largely) solved.

The youngsters are. Me? I bought at 24, and I've got equity of £200,000 in my house. There are winners as well as losers in this game.

Actually I do admit that is a real annoyance of mine. I see how many empty and seemingly abandoned properties there are around London and that they could be used far more effectively...the other problem is that some of the projects they are building on brownfield land (especially around the Thames Gateway) are pretty revolting and have very little in the way of decent public transport connections (they have found places to throw up houses but have given scant consideration to transportation needs).

                                What's keeping them unoccupied?
