  • Appropriate or not?

I'm trying to figure out if this situation was appropriate or not. Today is my husband's birthday so yesterday we did the family thing at his sister's house. She has a 5 or 6 year old (not exactly sure of the age but it's either one of those, no older) daughter. She also has a new boyfriend that she's only been seeing for about 3 months. There are approxiametly 3 adult males and 5 adult females plus our three grandaughters in the house. Let me also add that my husband's brother is wheelchair bound and has the mind of an adolecent 12 year old. Evening is progressing nicely cake, presents, ice cream the whole bit. Then it becomes time for the little one to go to bed. Her mom sends her in to get her PJ's on, shortly after that she says come and say good night to every one. Wait for it........

She comes out with Pajama pants on and no shirt. She's dancing around like children do still caught up a bit in the festivities. She's out there like this for a good 15 minutes (it's killing me to keep from saying something like PUT ON A SHIRT!!!) Then the Mom says go tell everyone good night and she proceeds to go to each of us individually with no shirt on and say good night. When she got to her aunt, the mom's sister, she checked her and said where is your shirt? Mom's boyfriends response was she's our little streaker she likes to go naked. Mom's response is yeah she doesn't like to wear shirts to sleep in.

To me I was like This seemed completly inappropriate to me. I was flabergasted!! I mentioned it on the way home and my husband was like she's just 5 or 6 what's the big deal? I just thought it was completly inappropriate. Am I wrong?

I'm kinda leaning with your Husband, 5 or 6, no big deal, but it is getting kind of close so I'll go along with maybe it's time to stop the streaking.

      Shes 6 years old.

      Nothing inappropriate there.

Its like a six years old kissing his dad on the mouth...Do you consider that gay/inappropriate?

5-6 years old... meh. Not so bad. I certainly wouldn't have been "flabbergasted" by it. Having said that, I'd have preferred the kid put on a shirt regardless of gender.

She's a child. It's just fine. I mean, not maybe the most common thing seen, but certainly not unusual.

It came naturally to her, why should we bring her down and enforce our problems with our own bodies and say that's wrong? She didn't do anything wrong. If she was like.. 9 years old, then it would be .. problematic. But 6 years old? Nah.. I mean, if it was a boy, no problem right? A 6 year old girl doesn't exactly have a set of hooters yet.. Not like they are supposed to wear bras etc.

Just relax ... if it happens again in say, few years, then you can comment on it saying hey, put a shirt on, OK? We're trying to eat, so it's polite to be dressed..

In that case, people would just ask for pictures, to help them judge whether it was appropriate or not

                  Yes.

5 or 6 years old is pretty young. Much older and it starts to get inppropriate. If she'd been 10 or 11 it would have been hard to say. Most kids by that age know better. Plus girls are starting to evelop breast buds, and it would be very uncomfortable for others.

                  But at 5 or 6, there's no difference between a boy's and a girl's upper bodies.

I remember that when I was 10 I asked my mother to make my sister start wearing shirts around the house. She was 5. I had just begun to realise the significance of girls' titties and genitals.

                    If I'd been 16 instead of 10 I wouldn't have cared.

You don't start with the appropriate behavior being cut in at a specific time. To do so sends mixed signals.
If it's appropriate now, why not later? It's a matter of training.

If I was the parent I would definitely discourage such activity. But yes, no foul (with information provided).

I'd start going with the conservative approach since the boyfriend isn't her biological father. But then again when it comes to family I'm rather conservative.
