I've not seen any evidence of that, but if so, they still shouldn't be.

No, I'm using them as an indoctrination center. The only debate I'm interested in is among scientists.

I don't like any reason based on the idea "if we let our opponents speak, they will convince people, therefore we must not let them speak."

So it boils down to: we are correct, people can't be convinced by logical debate, so we must indoctrinate them with our beliefs so they'll support us in the future.

That's the impression I'm getting, as well.

No, it boils down to: we are probably correct, people can't be convinced by logical debate, so we must indoctrinate them with our beliefs so they'll support us in the future. If those of us with the capability to actually judge any of these issues change our minds in the future we'll start indoctrinating people with the new stuff.

But we are taught to reject certain opponents out of hand. What opportunity do they have to change our mind?

They? The children? If they're interested enough and are smart enough in a topic, they can pursue higher education, and publish informed criticism in scientific journals.

They aren't? I thought that was the gist of oped and editorial pages. That being said it would be a fair statement of the majority if not entirety of papers to say they don't fairly offer competing opinions save those from competing equally biased papers.

As for them being paid for by my taxes, indirectly they are as a sizable portion (majority perhaps?) of their material for comment/reporting comes from news associated with government that wouldn't exist save for tax revenues.

Because the common man hates elitism. They'd destroy any politician that talked about them in this way. And they'll try to destroy the scientific establishment if they ever come to believe that a majority of scientists think of them like KH does...

Funny, I was taught Newton's Laws as divine fact. But I had no problem accepting that they were not completely true when the time came.

Most people are not able to think for themselves on scientific subjects. They are irrelevant to the real debate, except insofar as they can restrict it through political power.

They do, to at least some extent (i.e. to the extent that there exists a rough academic consensus). Didn't they teach econ at your high school?

                            • @Kuci: I don't believe you addressed the end-of-education point. If we're to have education, someone has to decide what is taught, since there's no possibility of teaching all views. Should, therefore, public education be abolished? If not, what makes creationism more worthy of being taught than that America has founded by Chuck Norris and the Gay Girl Guides?
