the warmth of the Brazilian people, who receive visitors with open arms.

A BOMB explodes outside a posh hotel in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro's best-known stretch of beach-front. A bus is set alight in nearby Botafogo, killing one person and injuring a dozen others. Gang warfare halts traffic on the city's main motorways.…
The fight against drug-fuelled violent crime in Brazil's picture-postcard city has national implications

Laziness, mass stupidity, mass ignorance, corrupt government. There are countless explanations for the unimpressiveness of their achievments.

The "modern" works on this list are all impressive pieces of art and/or architecture, but they do not even cone close to being at the limits of what human kind can achieve.

My own list of modern wonders would be more like:

          The moon landings
The mapping of the human genome (allthough that work isn't complete yet)
          Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur

Stuff like that. This "wonders project" is just another list of beautiful buildings.....

You do realize that the petronas towers were less massive and had a lower heighest ceiling than the World trade center built decades earlier. How can the petronas towers be an example of something even remotely close to being at the limits of what human kind could achieve? The petronas towers gained temporary recognition because in place of the antennae that are found on other skyscrapers a decision was made to install thin uninabitable decorative spires with the understanding that while current skyscraper height measurements exclude functional antennaes they include decorative structural elements like thin spires.

Check this link for a description of how "tallest skyscraper" distinction is bestowed.

Now a better example of wonder of the world skyscraper by your standard would be the Burj Dubai tower. That thing will make the petronas tower look like a low-rise.

A moon landing is an event, not really an artistic object.
Do you mean put the vehicle as a Wonder?

Actually the civ games may have some relevance here.

I'll suggest that if something seems totally out of place as a wonder of the world in a civ game then it probably shouldn't qualify here.

Does "petronas towers" wonder sound like a plausible wonder to add to the civ series?

As far as amazing things humans have acheived, the Moon Landings fit (unlike some of these named statues and buildings).

The fact that the movie studio had by several orders of magnitude the largest enclosure of man made vacuum in history. You can see from the parabolic arcs of the dust from the wheels of the little car and many others kinds of indirect evidence that the whole thing was filmed in a vacuum.

The creation of such conditions over such a large set is an unparalled achievment.

Erm....you didn't really read my post, did you? I was trying to move the discussion away from wonders having to be artistic objects. And as such, the Apollo project fits the bill nicely.
