Please, if you want influential Sci-fi look at Clarke (Communications SATs!) or Heinlein(HUDs!), both of which preceded ST by several years, or even decades. What did ST "Influence"? Handheld comms? Oh snap, it wasn't like the Military wasn't alreayd heading in that direction.
Those books were not nearly influential, sorry. Simply on the basis that far more people know who Captain Kirk is over Heinlein.

SW is fantasy with technology, plain and simple. Look at the social organisation. It's ridiculously backwards for such an advanced society. That's partly due to the fact that SW also has completely uneven technological advancement...
SW is a fantasy movie with futuristic elements. The first three are enjoyable, specially Empire and Return of the Jedi.
ST in all its forms is an attempt, with varying success, of creating science fiction.

Word, yo.
It's swordfighting in the future, it's painfully simple across every aspect of the show. It's such a dreadfully simple series of movies that I loathe watching them.
Give me ST: First Contact over any of the Star Wars...

Most of the backstory portrays SW as having an economic organization relatively similar to ours. I'm not sure what's so implausible about the political organization, unless you think that a dictatorship couldn't emerge at all.
I'll take technobabble over Star Wars' awful soap opera-esque dialogue and plotlines any day.
The issue, here, however, is who would win in a Battle. Obviously that would be the Star Warsverse.
That's the other thing...the storylines and plots behind ST are way more complex.
So complex they can't go a season without wild continuity errors? And hitting the reset Button at the end of every.single.episode.
Most of the movies are excellent allegories as well. They're simply a deeper show than the childish Star Wars BAM BAM BAM I SHOT YOU YOU DEAD kind of game that makes 19 year old boys "REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT A WII" so they can pretend to be a JEDI KNIGHT!!! And THROW THINGS AROUND THE ROOM TELEKENETICALLY!!!
Hmm...
Nope, I do not see the difference between the two, sorry.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
The difference is the diehards of both are blowhard losers, but there's more SW blowhards than ST -- because SW is easier to comprehend. IT HAS 'SPLOSIONS!!!

B5 trumps them both.
Oh my GOD! THAT SHOW IS AWFUL! You should be killed.
The entire show is written and produced by insecure little dweebs who were jealous of Star Trek. Rent the DVD boxsets and listen to the commentary, it's pathetic.

The economic organisation is ridiculous. Look at the ****ing planet Luke comes from (don't know name). His uncle and aunt are ****ing sand farmers operating as a family farm. And they buy used ****ing intelligent, talking robots to help them fix **** around the house.
It ****ing silly if it's supposed to be sci-fi (i.e. explore future social consequences of tech). As fantasy it's much more robust.
