I'm looking at you, Gepap and DD
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Look. Star Wars are a poorly made 1970s-era movie. The only thing remarkable about it was its special effects for the era, which look downright awful now in comparison.

It deeply disturbs me that people can watch these films more than once, and even more so for various people on this forum to dedicate their life to it.

That said, Star Trek is, by far, the more credible of the two in the scientific community. Star Wars fans generally aren't bright enough to notice or care, of course, because Star Wars has teddy bears and a dude in a corny mask and ST, well, doesn't.

There are a couple great shows on this, far more credible than this joker with "Dr Cocku". A couple off the top of my head are "The Science of Star Trek" and "How William Shatner Changed the World"

How could you call either of them "credible"?

And Trek has made decades of technobabble. Star Wars has made only about six movies of it, and it's fairly light.

You'd be amazed how accurate ST has been at predicting innovations of the future, and how much the show has influenced many modern scientists.

Again, watch the two movies where they interview such scientists. Most of which are more credible than this Doctor **** guy.

I call the one that doesn't have magical wizards the more credible. Who's the more powerful wizard? Lord Vader or Lord Voldemort?

All I heard is that SW is a bunch of fantasy created based on scientific basis, while ST has stuff in it that is theoretically plausible.

Now we know why stone age Teddy Bears can kick the Galactic Empire's ass, because both are so laughable that we can make any **** up!

Neither of them are particularly good, but ST attempts to be more scientific than SW.

They're both enjoyable, though, so I suspend my disbelief except when there are blatant errors instead of mere speculative elements.

I've always thought that was a weakness, because the technobabble explanations make me wince.

I'd rather assume that everything just works than have them try to justify it.

I'll take technobabble over Star Wars' awful soap opera-esque dialogue and plotlines any day.

That's the other thing...the storylines and plots behind ST are way more complex. Most of the movies are excellent allegories as well. They're simply a deeper show than the childish Star Wars BAM BAM BAM I SHOT YOU YOU DEAD kind of game that makes 19 year old boys "REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT A WII" so they can pretend to be a JEDI KNIGHT!!! And THROW THINGS AROUND THE ROOM TELEKENETICALLY!!!

Eh. As long as they avoid overly technical explanations and simply use a buzzword I'm happy. Like when I heard ST mention "Heisenberg compensators" as an element of their transporter system. That was cool.

Please, if you want influential Sci-fi look at Clarke (Communications SATs!) or Heinlein(HUDs!), both of which preceded ST by several years, or even decades. What did ST "Influence"? Handheld comms? Oh snap, it wasn't like the Military wasn't alreayd heading in that direction.

Yeah, I saw "How Shatner changed the World" If I wanted a 2hour I-love-me-fest I'd watch a "Best of" Bush State of Union" DVD.
