  • Another case of the pot calling the kettle black coming from the Walmart lackey...

Wasn't it you gatecrashing my 'US drivers are dumb' thread only half an hour ago...?

Why don't you stop wasting our time and go stack some shelves...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Yeah, the Bolivarian Youth is a radical student group here in South Florida. I accompanied three of them. Local NPR just did a piece on them this morning.

Oh, and I agree with everything LotM wrote in that last post.

I would still suggest that lunch counter sit in has a somewhat different nature than a demo or counter demo. A direct civil disobedience action only takes a couple of people (sometimes only one) a demo on the other hand usually takes hundreds or thousands to make an impression, which is the whole point - a demo is not an act in the way a sitin is (well except in countries where demos are banned) its a form of communication, and the first thing it communicates, to get folks to pay attention to the rest, is how many folks there are willing to come out.

It would have been very odd to have 5000 folks at the Greensboro Woolworths. I dont think they would have fit.
In Che's case, the counter-protest worked very similar to the sit-in. It incited violence which made the opposition look bad and changed the story from:

"Supporters of random guy who us reporters won't fully tell you about rally in Miami"

          to:
"supporters of some random guy who counter-protesters call a terrorist, attack those counter-protesters"

          Which is a victory.

Then you clearly haven't seen pictures of the first manifestations of gay pride- the demos had hardly enough people to make a quilt. They still made an impression.

The 'point' of any demo is not necessarily to make a 'big impression' but to show that opposition to racism, or institutionalized homophobia or sexism or a false war exists.

Currently there is a lone demonstrator outside the Houses of Parliament, who has made a very big impression indeed- such a big impression that the British Government, to its shame, had to create new laws to try to stop his protest.

Also, the Anti-Apartheid Movement's continuous picket outside South Africa House during the years of white minority rule was never great in number, but its quiet permanent presence was a constant reminder and rejection of what the tenants of South Africa House stood for.

Or opposition to Castro, or to abortion rights, or whatever.

I certainly note that in the US, where small demos for all sorts of unlikely causes are very common, if you are demoing on behalf of a cause that is known to already exist, a very small demo doesnt do much for you, and can even hurt.

Of course if you have some unique image, that the media latch onto, it doesnt really matter how few you are.
