      That's an urban myth. We've done threads right here at Apolyton which showed you'd need a total surface area greater then the entire continental US to produce to total current electrical demand solely by solarpower. That still wouldn't prevent blackouts during cloudy days.

        What about a place in the coast with constant fast winds, putting a windfarm there, and a desalination plant there, that would be a good use methinks

                      We'll need desalination plants to moderate the rising sea levels from global warming and irrigate all the near-arable lands needed for food production. Or we could just pump ocean water into some interior basin eventually creating an inland sea, we could turn Nevada into really big saltwater lake.
