It's quite simple - there was an itch to get in some "payback", for domestic politics reasons as well as due to a crusader mentality.

The top leadership and his sycophants are convinced the boss is infallible, while the more pragmatic elements of the Bush administration see no problem in blowing up some poor darkie village where there may or may not be a terrorist, as long as it strengthens your political base.

After all, it's not like the American public cares about dead foreigners, especially when one can ever so subtly pluck at the heartstrings of revenge and racism (eg. Foxnews' "scurrying like rats" comment on the victims of the airstrike).

If I go there, I'm going to get something, or I'll be replaced by someone who can produce the results. It's the 'everyone is so average'-thinking, so popular these days. a) Americans claim great success killing 'A senior terrorist figure and lots of his henchmen...'

b) Americans backtrack, admitting the didn't get him but 'got a lot of bad guys...'

c) The press finds most of the bodies look suspiciously like women and children. No comment from America.

I'd say this happens about 75-90% of the time...

And China protested, sought compensation, and it appears, received $4.5 million. The US continues to maintain it was a mistake, as opposed to a deliberate strike. I know that is disputed, but I don't know the truth of it, and I don't think you do either.

Thats no motivation. How does a bombing that doesnt get a high level AQnik help in domestic politics?

He did NOT call you a fascist.

He was pointing out that your claim that 2/3 of the world hates the USA and at least tacitly supported/approved of the 9/11 attacks is something that one typically hears from right-wing Americans who are often accused of being fascists.

Hence "I thought only poor, benighted American fascists..."

He's not calling you a fascist. He's saying that either the American "fascists" are not so wrong as some would have them believe, or you're wrong.

America has come a long way. It used to be the land of "can do", now it's the land of "can **** up, all the time".

What's best, half the residents (repub voters) love it, because it allows them to feel equal to the smart half of the population. It's ok to be an ignorant tool in the US these days, you're just as good as those who made the effort to educate themselves. True genius on part of the repub political machine, that.
