I found this piece quite amusing considering history :

Cardinal Renato Martino, Pope Benedict XVI’s top prelate for justice issues and a former Vatican envoy to the U.N., condemned the death sentence in a newspaper interview published Thursday, saying capital punishment goes against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

They just updated the story on MSN, they are to hang Saddam in the next 48 hours and the US Military has recieved a formal request from Iraq goverment to transfer Saddam to their custody. Thus this is the first steps leading up to his hanging. Looks like it is really going to happen.

..."If the American administration insists in handing the president to the Iraqis, it would commit a great strategic mistake which would lead to the escalation of the violence in Iraq and the eruption of a destructive civil war," al-Dulaimi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Iraq's highest court on Tuesday rejected Saddam's appeal against his conviction and death sentence for the killing of 148 Shiites in the northern city of Dujail in 1982. The court said the former president should be hanged within 30 days.

Al-Dulaimi, Saddam's lawyer, said the ousted leader should enjoy protection from his enemies as a "prisoner of war" and remain in U.S. custody.

"According to the international conventions, it is forbidden to hand a prisoner of war to his adversary," al-Dulaimi said.

"I urge all the international and legal organizations, the
United Nations secretary-general, the Arab League and all the leaders of the world to rapidly prevent the American administration from handing the president to the Iraqi authorities," al-Dulaimi said....

I doubt he can do anything to stop Saddam's hanging.

Al-Dulaimi could have a point if iraq was an occupational area of the liberation forces, but since there has been election of governal bodies, his claims fails.

Edit: When he is hung, I hope that it's done in anonymity and that his remains is burnt and spread so there is no "shrine" supporters could "defend". Maybe a spread in the marshes the he so vigorusly tried to destroy would be sufficient - guess the inhabitans would be very stiff in their opposal of making a shrine.

No, but yet again the effort is made to shove everything off on the United States.

Well, seeing how we invaded... it's quite reasonable to do so.

Dammit, can't argue against such logic

Now polytubbies - listen to the all knowing Imran Siddiqui because he speaks the thruth - don't ever interfere with dicators and let them do what atrocities they want.

PS. If any polytubbie are aiming for dictatorship, I guess that Imran can give legal advice with a discount.

We wouldn't want them to take responsibility for anything. Be a shock to their reality.

He's his lawyer... since when he is going to admit Saddam has to take responsibility? If he does, he's a horrible advocate for his client.

Not Saddam. We all know he won't takle responsibility for jack****.

Iraqi courts convicted him of crimes against Iraqi people.
Certainly the USA has the obligation to release him to their justice.

Well... no... we could always stick him in Gitmo for a while if we wanted . Or give him to the Kurds with a big sign saying "I'm the real Saddam".
