Ideally, I should have said "one or two dumbass Christians". I said "Christians" to make it shorter, and because I'm lazy, and because the context would have made it clear that that was what I was saying anyway.

One of the reasons they can provide a good education is because of the money they get from Christian organisations from all over the world.

It is these people's STATED POLICY, not hidden, not somehow obfuscated, but STATED in PLAIN SIMPLE WORDS that the only reason they run these schools and hospitals and charitable organisations is to convert people. They have NO OTHER AIM.

This is entirely untrue. Thousands upon thousands of students graduate from these schools every year. They are some of the biggest in the country - the St. Josephs and Bishop Cottons of Bangalore, Don Bosco and Cathedral of Bombay, Loretto House and Le Martinier's and St. Xavier's in Calcutta, Frank Anthony of Delhi, among others. I didn't go to one, but I know many many students and graduates of such schools. None of them have "been converted," nor can they name a single converted schoolmate.

And I can add a few to that list. Saint Paul's, Saint Rafael's and Saint Arnold's of Indore, Saint Vincent's of Pune, and so on...

Sorry, but that's completely true. The reason they were founded, and the reason they exist, is to convert people. They may not do it directly, they may even have given up on the conversion policy, but that is still technically their charter.

Oh, it's definitely in their charters, which were written in the 19th century. But for all intents and purposes, they are regular private schools, albeit with lower tuition fees than the secular ones.

The atmosphere is also a bit... oppressive for someone who is an ardent believer of anything other than Christianity.

The problem is, the new schools which are coming up with the money American and other evangelical movements are sending are rather... radical.

The Christian community in India is also getting more polarised. They recently protested against the Da Vince Code, and forced the government to include a disclaimer at the climactic moment that "This movie is not real", which totally ruined the fun. I've hated these Christian organisations since.

Still, I prefer loud protests to violence, which is what happened when they tried to film Water, and when some poor historian wrote a book about Shivaji, and when...

I don't know. If they did, it didn't get any publicity in India.

The people who got violent when that book was written about Shivaji were secular Shivaji fanatics, not Hindu fanatics. They hate Hindutva, in fact. Read up about it in the Wiki.

They've publicly distanced themselves from Hindutva organisations, and have even attacked the RSS leader K. Sudarshan when he visited Solapur by throwing footwear at him.

Pure-blooded Brahmins like me are one of the primary the targets of their hatred.

Well, maybe the Christians didn't want mobs of enraged movie-goers converging on the nearest Christian church demanding the deceivers be thrown out of the country. What with the rise in Hindu nationalism and all.

Why would Hindu nationalists go after a movie which the Christians oppose, and which is not in any way connected with Hinduism?

Why would Hindu nationalists rename the city of Bombay "Mumbai" when it was founded by the Portuguese?

                              Water?

The day before filming was due to begin, the crew was informed that there were a few complications with gaining location permits. The following day we were greeted with the news that 2,000 protesters had stormed the ghats, destroying the main film set, burning and throwing it into the holy river. Protesters burnt effigies of Deepa Mehta, and threats to her life began. There were three main political/religious parties leading the angry mob: the BJP( Bharatiya Janata Party), the VHU (Vishwa Hindu Parishad), both well established groups within the state of Uttar Pradesh; and the KSRSS (Kashi Sanskrit Raksha Sangharsh Samiti), a party formed overnight from the RSS (Raksha Sangharsh Samiti) specifically targeting Deepa Mehta. The KSRSS claimed their role was as the guardians of the culture of Varanasi and came forward with threats of violence against her. The head of the RSS approaching press with statements to support this:

"Breaking up the sets was far too mild an act, the people involved with the film should have been beaten black and blue. They come with foreign money to make a film which shows India in poor light because that is what sells in the west. The west refuses to acknowledge our achievements in any sphere, but is only interested in our snake charmers and child brides. And people like Deepa Mehta pander to them." (The Week magazine, India, Feb 13th, 2000)
