I actually doubt that. I think Nixon probably didn't do all that much worse than the Presidents who came before him. He just managed to get caught. I'm sure Joe Kennedy had some shady things going on in his son's election campaigns.

Joe Kennedy wasn't President and that's a strong charge. Any proof?

Until you do then you should change that "I'm sure" to a "I suspect" or a much more accurate "I'm being wildly speculative".

Of course Joe Kennedy wasn't President, but he was the paterfamilias. He was the guy in charge of everything. Jack, Bobbie, Ted all of them used Joe's large and influential contacts which he had gotten through years of working in the Democrat party, as a successful Irish businessman, and Ambassador to Great Britain.

As for shady things going on in the 1960 elections, are you serious? You never heard of, oh, the mafia helping out John in Illinois?

There is the famous line John would tell about the 1960 election:

When John F. Kennedy was asked about the level of involvement and influence that his father had held in his razor-thin presidential bid, JFK would joke that on the eve before the election, his father had asked him the exact number of votes he would need to win - there was no way he was paying "for a land-slide".

That quote from Kennedy's father could easily be understood to be his father financially helping out the campaign to pay for ads or what not. I again ask for proof of wrong doing.

Not to mention that Kennedy chose LBJ for a running mate because LBJ could "deliver" Texas.

I've always thought it odd that the Dems are so willing to overlook the voting fraud of their favorites and harp on the truly insignificant campaign office burglery...
unless they were afraid that Nixon's "plumbers" would have led to the uncovering of Dem vote fraud...

No, Grand Rapids is a ****hole and Omaha isn't. Omaha is very nice; it's the rest of Nebraska that's the ****hole.

Michigan is probably a bigger ****hole, though. We don't have anyplace nearly as bad as Detroit or Flint.

That's one of the most tortured apologist explainations I've ever seen. Everyone knew what that meant.

I do like asking for proof when a Dem is accused of shady dealings but believing any sort of innuendo of a Republican's shady dealings without the slighest shread of proof (like Bush skipping out on the Texas National Guard). The press back in those days kept more than affairs hushed up after all.

Though there is the interesting set of circumstances in Chicago, where Kennedy won Cook County by an amazing 450,000 which allowed him to win Illinois by 9,000. Shady enough that people were trying to persuade Nixon to ask for a recount, which he refused to do.

Where is the vote fraud in the Kennedy case? I'm still waiting.

It is amusing that you think words that clearly applied to Nixon describe Bush well

Why is it amusing? The press is still stuck on Watergate/Nixon today. They all want to be Bob Woodward and now they finally have their chance. Given the circumstances, it's not surprising at all that the press refers to Bush in the same way they referred to Nixon, just as it's not surprising that they've been treating Iraq like it's Vietnam since almost the beginning...

Reading the editorials in the Chicago Trib today and one writer blamed Ford's loss to Carter, not on the pardon, not on his mistakes during the debate, but on....

While the vote fraud recount challenges in court didn't go anywhere (Hell, it isn't like they would, if you deny people ability to vote or have dead guys vote, no recount will overturn that):

"You gotta swallow this one," says a Republican hack in Oliver Stone's Nixon, referring to the 1960 election, in which John F. Kennedy prevailed. "They...

On the other hand, some fraud clearly occurred in Cook County. At least three people were sent to jail for election-related crimes, and 677 others were indicted before being acquitted by Judge John M. Karns, a Daley crony. Many of the allegations involved practices that wouldn't be detected by a recount, leading the conservative Chicago Tribune, among others, to conclude that "once an election has been stolen in Cook County, it stays stolen." What's more, according to journalist Seymour Hersh, a former Justice Department prosecutor who heard tapes of FBI wiretaps from the period believed that Illinois was rightfully Nixon's. Hersh also has written that J. Edgar Hoover believed Nixon actually won the presidency but in deciding to follow normal procedures and refer the FBI's findings to the attorney general—as of Jan. 20, 1961, Robert F. Kennedy—he effectively buried the case.

And I don't think Hersh is a Republican partisan, frankly. The ultimate answer is the proof is the same as the proof that dead people vote in Chicago elections.

Actually, JFK asked LBJ as a courtesy because LBJ was the power in the Senate. The plan was for LBJ to graciously decline and for Kennedy to then select Shiver. Much to Kennedy's shock, LBJ accepted.
