Did you know there's no discernible difference in quality between component and HDMI?

Of course, it the studios choose to implement it, it makes component worthless.

I spent a month doing A/B tests trying to convince myself of that, unsuccessfully.

That's odd because on my 1080p display, the only difference between HDMI and Component is HDMI has artifacts at 1080p60 (not 1080p30) and component doesn't.

Lucky you. I'd prefer if I was equally happy with component, but alas...

There's actually quite a few people who insist Component has better quality than HDMI if only for the color depth.

HDMI 1.2 and lower has limited color depth compared to a signal like component.

HDMI 1.3 and higher have "deep color", but not prior (and the only HDMI 1.3 device is the PS3, IIRC).

I actually preferred component for SD and non-upscaled DVDs, and was connected via both for a long time. Disconnected the component eventually because I didn't use it too often. Also, using a bi-directional cable lets my TV control my cable box.

The big benefit of HDMI 1.3 will be the audio, at least for me.

even sony lovers (PS1, PS2, PSP) are doubters of the PS3 (And not just me)

I don't think it will be successful

THat distinction means a lot less now when our dollar is .86 US than it did a few years ago when it was arouns .62.

Plus if the US doesn't get their spending and debt under control, we may see even higher levels. Heck we touched .91 earlier this year before the drop in commodity prices took effect to bring our dollar to more reasonable levels

I am considering entering the console market for the first time in 20 years and for me the Wii seems to be the choice. I am not a "hard-core gamer" so the fun factor and the lesser price of then Wii all sound attractive.

The Xbox 360 sounds like a good choice to me as well.

Just a question-- do people think that if one of these 3 dropped out of the console wars, it would be better overall for games? Or worse.

I am just thinking that fewer platforms could mean more excellent games that were specifically engineered for the box in question. Or do you think that the more monopolistic this segment becomes, the more gamers will be hurt by reduced competition

Microsoft wasn't always in the Market. If Sony drops out (Sega has dropped out before remember) and Microsoft starts being inefficient/etc then I bet some other big company of electronics will move in.

Its funny that people still think this means something.

For all intents and purposes, the exchange is 1 for 1 now.

Oh, and Futureshop is a massively popular store in Canada.

Indeed.. and IIRC, the only reason Sony really came in as it did was because they were working with Nintendo on a new console, but then Nintendo decided not to go with Sony (and screwed them over), so Sony decided to use all of its tech and create the Playstation 1, which kicked serious ass in the console market.

There will be a market for a second console gaming platform. And sometimes even three consoles can work within the same market. If one starts to dominate and kills off its competition (as Sony did, when Sega decided it didn't want to compete anymore and Nintendo started lagging seriously behind) a competitor will enter (as Microsoft did when Sony started dominating).

Was just out at a nearby bestbuy looking for a wii nunchuk

They had a pile of probably 20 ps3s sitting there. I was there only a fe w minutes, but I only saw people looking and laughing at them. Lots of controllers and other peripherals as well.

The store also had probably 10 or so xbox360s (not sure which version).

But no wii's and no wii controllers

According to a worker I spoke to, the wii's have come in in good numbers and have exited nearly as quickly, but the ps3s just aren't moving well at all.

I wonder how close N got to its goal of 4mil sold worldwide by Dec 31.
