I can only imagine what would happen if instead of that insipid fatman, we had a St. Nicholas like the one in Europe, you know, the guy who looks like an actual bishop? Oh, and add his black little Moor too, and show him destroying pagan temples and giving dowries and helping sailors.
Fundies tend to be quite anti-christmas. Claiming christmas trees came from pagan traditions and that sort of thing. I don't think christian fundies approve much of christmas at all putting it a notch above Halloween.

Not really. See how much the Free Republic or Fox News whines about the War on Christmas...

The only casualties in the War on Christmas are the children.

            you've got to be kidding.

Fox news and Free republic are right wing ultra political conservatives.

They are not religious fundamentalists. They merely pander to religious fundies when it serves their political agenda to do so.

That's a silly post. What part of the coalition that makes up the political right do you think Fox News is trying to pander to with the War on Christmas spiel? Libertarians?

I don't know the scenario out in the US, but an equivalent 'War on Christmas' sentiment here in the UK plays more into the idea of political correctness (and all that entails with regard to pandering to minorities etc...) more than the defence of Christmas by fundies.

Take for example the Queen's Christmas Speech, there was going to be an alternative Muslim's speech (or something along those lines) as well. It stirred up a hornets nest amongst middle Englanders (who are not fundies, just xenophobic) until it was accepted that it was only being done for political and not religious purposes at which point the idea was dropped.

That's something to that, but that's not the end of it. "War on Christmas" cheerleaders like O'Reilly see the war as a battle by "secularists" to get religion out of the public sphere. In fact, "Happy Holidays," to them, is a proxy for gay marriage and abortion. Over here, there's a considerable overlap between xenophobia and religious fudamentalism.

Why do people get mad at Merry Christmas?
I don't know. Never met one of them. It's not like there's a cable news channel that dedicates a month of its programming to that cause...

Certainly not fundies. Probably half of whom won't even own a TV lest it's obscene advertisments pollute the tiny minds of their children with unclean thoughts inspired by sight partially naked human flesh. To say nothing of rumors of costume malfunctions at superbowls.

                        No.

Fox is probably trying to pander to the more typical church going crowd (ie not fundies) with that sort of angle.

just fyi 'christian church goer' does not equal 'fundie' or 'fundamentalist'.

fundies are the sorts who send their kids to creepy brainwashing jesus camps and the like.

Same with this. There is no rational basis why Happy Holidays devalues Christmas, since Christmas IS a holiday encompased by "Happy Holidays".

Heaven forbid if people celebrate something else.

The problem came about when a few department store chains decided to be politically correct and instructed employees not to say Merry Christmas. They bought into the rhetoric that some imaginary demographic would be offended.

There was a deliberate attempt to quash the Christmasiness, which is itself an offensive act.

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

                              I celebrate Alvistide.

If most religions think Alvis' love of liquor and guns and revenge is creepy, then maybe most religions can hash it out in Hell for all eternity! Alvis'll smoke those *****es!

Alvis was the holiest man ever to slap iron, he killed for your sins!

The true meaning of Alvistide is neither ham nor pomp. Nay, It's drinkin, drinkin and revenge.

Most Christians that I know think that the War on Christmas hoopla is idiotic. It takes a pretty whacked out person to get caught up in it.

And the idea that half of the fundies in this country don't own a TV is pretty ridiculous.
