Seriously, why is it that so many national leaders are quite literally bat**** insane?

power corrupts, I guess, but I never really understood it - it never corrupted me, I swear.

Niyazov was a state-raised orphan, and wanted to be a father to his nation. That means they had to do what Daddy told them.

By the standards of nutty totalitarian dictators he was fairly benevolent.

President-for-life... that's a nice title. What is the difference between president-for-life and a dictator?

A president for life doesn't necessarily hold a lot of power.

LC, yes.. he must TAKE power.. he will be a strong man and you will be crushed.

So this is some kind of.. symbol of 'wanting to grab on to the power but actually not being able to hold it', kind of like the emperor of Japan or the future symbolic position in China, when the commies have to share power more? I'm sure they'll get one of them.. emperors as well. With no real power that is.

Power corrupts, and also attracts. It attracts to very sort of people who have no business wielding power.

That's the bigger issue. It's not like these countries are bastions of democracy beforehand, so it takes a certain amount of cunning, ruthlessness, and general bat**** insanity to rise to the top in the first place.

I think that was President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo. He died in Feb. 2005 and was eventually succeeded by his son.
