Right, I've read though Blair's speech. Its hardly the death of multiculturalism in the UK like the Telegraph proclaims.

Asking people to adhere to a set of common standards, even if they're hardly uniquely British, isn't "intergrate or get out".
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
    -Richard Dawkins

Which is precisely what I was trying to say in the first place? Multiculturalism is being killed as in "all cultures good, Muslims mistreating their wives good, we have no right to judge", not as in "people with different cultures adhering to a single standard and discarding things incompatible with that standard".

What about that red dot thingy the women wear to show that they're on sale at Hecht's or whatever? It's not really clothing, of course, but it is part of a uniform.

OP: What's the practical significance of this, aside from immigrants being required to learn english? Was it formerly legal in the UK to beat your wife for going out bareheaded, provided you were Muslim, or is this just a tough-guy attitude about expectations with no real legal significance? The article makes it sound like the latter.

              You must choose. EITHER:
-India has a unique and wonderful culture, and therefore Indians should be deported.
              OR
-India has no unique culture of its own and is essentially British.

The July bombers were from normal, middle class homes. Obviously it doesn't help that much.
has it occurred to anyone that veils are stupid? And women shouldn't be forced to wear them?

The numbers wearing them are pretty low to begin with.

I've never been able to understand what the heck 'multiculturalism' was about anyway (and i'm for open borders and uncontrolled migration BTW, I'm just not prepared to give up on all that cool Western Enlightenment civilization ****). Stonings, sharia law, that **** is just plain wrong no matter what your 'culture' is. That SHOULD be obvious and the fact that it isn't to some people makes me sick.

Now that multiculturalism is over, is there any way we can send them back home?

aneeshm- since multiculturalism is the principle of different cultures coexisting harmoniously and in tolerance of each other within one nation, there is no part of Blair's speech that actually goes against that principle.

Let's put it this way- if a Christian extremist came here to violently protest against the celebration of Eid, they'd be shown the door very swiftly.

The sections of Blair's speech that your article conveniently omits detailed examples of sucessful multiculturalism with the Hindu and Sikh communities in Britain, after all. So on behalf of the Hindus and Sikhs of Britain, I'd like you to carefully consider whether multiculturalism is really such a bad thing.
