hmmm... this thread got me thinking.

I live across the street from a Ranch 99, which is a chain of Asian supermarkets, mostly on the West Coast.

here in suburban Asia-town, we've got Asian restaurants, car dealers, shopping centers, supermarkets, theaters, you name it. But where's the Asian equivalent of Walmart?

ah, i can only dream it now... endless aisles of tacky clothing... live fish at a dollar a pound... every karaoke tape known to humanity... all served up in pink bags with an asian smiley face ^____^. we'd have nicer greeters to, that would bow at every customer...

I don't see the difference between chain grocery stores and chain walmart stores.

Walmart is the only store around here that's open 24 hours, which is a very important point for me.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Yeah, that is important for me also. Of course, there are sevreal 24 hour grocery stores around me (and I generally don't go to Walmart) (although I did at one time).

Why doesn't Che like Walmart? It's one of the biggest supporters of communism.

Che why do you hate communism?

I shop there as well. The fact remains that if you compare the income level of the average Costco shopper to the average Walmart shopper you'll find that Costco's costumers are relatively affluent and spend more money in the store.

If you like retail or if you find most of your experience is retail and thus your best opportunities are in retail then why not consider a job at a specialty place like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or The Home Depot? I understand that part of their marketing model is to taught their relatively higher wages and the length of time employees continue to work for them. This is to show they are more socially responsible and better places to work then Walmart.

There are four or five Asian supermarket chains with stores in San Diego including Ranch 99. I'm not sure how they do it but they do offer some incredible deals on live seafood. A few weeks ago I was shopping there and saw whole live crabs being sold for $6 each. They were big ones too.
