Texas lawmakers struck hard at illegal immigrants Monday

I know. I can't understand it either, but there you have it.
I think he is of the opinion that the net pluses of immigration outweight the net minuses. He's actually right about that.
The main costs of immigration are education for children and poverty stricken people who get no preventive care, come down with a major illness, go to an emergency room, then can't pay the bill. Education for children costs money up front but when the child grews up society gets its money back via a life time of higher wages paid to an educated member of society. That is a net plus.
The medical cost problem is more of a function of social class since that's exactly what poor American citizens do as well. If someone makes $15,000 per year and gets cancer then of course they can't pay $1,000,000 in bills when they don't have insurance. The solution is to make every worker legal and to make sure every worker has health insurance.
Let's face it. There will never be a major backlash against Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, or UK immigrants this day and age. They speak English, their educated, tend to be middle class, and they look just like the majority of Americans. I believe after Mexicans Canadians are the second largest group of illegal workers in the US but you never hear conservatives whining about the "invasion" of white, middle class, educated Canadians. Now do you?
You do hear them whine about nonwhite Mexicans though.

It's only natural to feel more comfortable with people similar to yourself. Birds of a feather and all that.

Even an illegal alien from a fellow white English speaking country can just easily blend into the majority. When a white guy comes up speaking perfect English 99% of the people will just assume he is legal or native born where as when a brown skinned person comes up speaking perfect English a fair number of people wonder where he is from. He was probably born and raised in LA but people still think of him as foreign while the white foreigner gets a free pass because he doesn't look foreign.
Well, I haven't seen any studies that lump illegal immigration and legal immigration in together, so I can't comment.

Like I said, it's only natural.

Let us not forget your prior post of why illegals would want to become legal. One of the main reasons would be to obtain credit. I doubt that current illegals would not take advantage of that when they become legal. Credit agencies are very, very, very good at finding people (hell, in fact the government sometimes uses credit reports to find folks).
And you are correct about education. In the long run it works itself as a plus. Its an investment.

Assuming they're in a place where they can get a decent education. There are places where the school districts are overcrowded and operating with little budget, and I think illegals would just exacerbate the problem.
