There is no way this should be illegal. Frankly, Ramo, I think you're letting your outrage compromise your principles.

It should be illegal. The call is basically fraudulent. This sort of dishonesty severely distorts the democratic process. There are reports of supporters of Hodes calling his campaign to complain because they're being pestered by these robocalls.

You keep using that word. I don't think you know how to spell it.

      That's what spell-checks are for

I've gotten three calls since I got home today from the Republicans (and my missed call has "political phone call" 4 other times) so it's possible the Dems are pulling this as well.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

A phone call saying "I'm calling about the X campaign" and presenting information about him should be illegal?

Really, think about the implications of that re: free speech.

No. Quit whining. This is an internet forum, not a scholarly paper.

A robocall on behalf of a candidate or campaign committee should begin, and not end, with a disclaimer stating that it is on behalf of said candidate or campaign committee. The idea that this would kill free speech any more than the other restrictions we have on political advertising is nonsense.

Lets face it, calling people fifteen times in a row is harrasment. Combining that with the sponsor being identified at the end, very quickly, just makes it worse. This isn't a free speech issue. And it does confuse people. I've talked with a number of people today who were angry and confused at the Democrats. If they were angry because of any information provided in the call, that would be one thing. But they're angry because they think the call came from the Democrats, because there was a clear attempt to make them think that. There is absolutely no way that that should be legal.

So you're admitting you were wrong, then?
I think they're being ambiguous with a patently malevolent intent in mind. From what I remember working in a survey firm a few years ago, Canada makes it illegal not to identify yourself when calling on behalf of an organization. I don't know American law, but the Canadian approach makes sense.

Just like every political ad on TV? You guys are really reaching for reasons to be outraged...

                              I beg to differ.

That's not what you were claiming before. You were claiming that the Republicans were "posing as someone else in order to incriminate him." You were wrong.

I based my stance on the OP. But I don't want to argue the semantics indefinitely; being deliberately opaque about your identity is close to posing as, if not equal. Legally it may not, but ethically it's still a despicable move.

And BTW, this > pushpolling. Shame on you if you can't see the difference.
