How did Rollie rob that pathetic goal he let in?

You mustn't understand me. I am talking about the Flames' goal. You know, the one you should never see in the major leagues. The one where Flames fans busted their guts laughing and Oil fans quietly shrunk down in their seats from embarrassment.

Edit: you mean the game. Yes, Rollie robbed the game after he nearly died from embarrassment. The Oilers themselves were pretty terrible, save for the excellent PK on a pathetic Flames PP.

      • Hmm interesting, I was checking out Selänne's stats, he will be breaking some nice ones soon.

1 goal way from goal number 500. Should be a nice one.

981 games played so game number 1000 coming up.

568 assists so he might break 600 this season as well.

made his record in assist this week with 5 assist in one game. Overall after slow start, he seems to have a good ride, 2+0 last night, 3+6 in last three games.

He doesn't have any great victories either.. no Stanley Cup, no world cup, not even world championships.. been to both finals though, no Stanley Cup finals.

But this season, Anaheim is looking so good that they might make the finals. I hope he wins it because he has maybe one or two seasons left. Would be shame if such a great player never won anything.

The Oilers sucked for 45 out of 60 minutes. They got outworked, outhit, and plain old outplayed.

The difference was Rolie is hot, the Flames PP sucks, and Kipper served dinner to Sykora with a juicey rebound for the GWG.

Any given night, that game could have gone either way, easily. I'm happy the Oilers won, but I'm not happy with how 19 of the guys on the ice played.
I was actually thinking most of what you said but its just sounds like sour grapes to say " WE were better and we wuz robbed"

Bottom line is that the Flames played reasonably well and in the long run thats the key . . . The wins will come

But the Flames still have their problems such as losing on special teams when they win the part of the game that is 5 on 5 and generall not enough scoring

While I agree somewhat with the sentiment that its kind of nice when an aging star finally wins a cup (Ray Bourque comes to mind), there is always part of me that thinks that a truly great player would have found a way to be so great that they LEAD their team to a win.

The reality can be that the supporting cast is often too weak so its not really the fault of the star, I guess. But at the same time, there are so very many examples of improbable champions that its tough to accept that the star never ever had the ingredients with him to lead on an improbable run.

              • I think there are too many variables to make the assumption that a great player should have the opportunity to lead the team on "an improbable run". There have been many examples of teams going on such a run but with 16 teams making the playoffs even a star player can't necessarily put it all together at the right time to lead his team but I don't think that makes him any less a star.

Not sure I would include Selanne among that elite group of players capable of doing so, but he isn't far off if at all. I would be pleased to see him get a chance for the cup

I only have to remember the Jets leaving Winnipeg to know what kind of player Selanne is (and Keith Tkachuk for that matter). They both displayed their true colours at that time and the respect I have for Selanne as a player and a person equals the lack of respect I have for Tkachuk.

                • Sava, can we get an update on your Gionta vs Iginla stats?

Make sure you include Iggy's 2 goals tonight and Gionta's pointless, -1 game.

There are many classy and very good players out there that may never have been a champion. But the measure of a truly great player often involves their ability to contribute to . . nay . . lead a team to success. Its a team game and its tough to think of someone as great if they never contributed to team success.

                      • Hey gang

O good night for the Canadian teams--

Ottawa-- decent win-- they are in a situation that they will take 2 points anyway they can-- Emery seems solid and that may be all they need to get untracked
Montreal-- continues to show Minnesota that the east is tough

Calgary-- solid win in which they clearly and decisively outplayed an overmatched team-- exactly as it should happen.

Toronto-- actually a pretty good effort. They play Buffalo tough and 2 empty netters (I'm sure Asher can point out repeatedly that the first resulted from a McCabe miscue)made the final score quite misleading.

                          • Flubber, that's your definition. You need to get very lucky in the process to win the cup, to be in the right team. I don't care who you are, in this day and age, no one player turns the heat on like that.

Selänne isn't a leader. He should never be Captain of any team, he is not that type. He can, however, fire up the team by scoring quickly, he can overturn unlikely games into wins by scoring quickly, that is, he can contribute enough to make a win for the weaker team night in, night out. But not more than that.
