The average lifespan on mine are about 5 -6 months (up from 3...yeah!!
). I do always buys second hand at around a 100$.

I relied on the maxim that most people are honest and would not steal an unlocked bike in broad daylight while I ran into the restaurant to get takeout. I have had much success with this in the past.
Was it a basic beater bike, or something higher end?
If you have quick releases on the wheels, (lots of beach cruisers hereabouts don't) my trick when I was too lazy to lock it is to loosen the quick release on the rear window and flip the shifters a bit so there will be an impromptu gear change. That would slow down any grab and go types just enough for me to get within range.
