German troops in skull photos row

German newspaper Bild photo showing a soldier with a skull
Bild published the pictures under the heading "Shock photos"
Photos apparently showing German troops posing with a skull in Afghanistan have caused outrage in Germany.

The tabloid newspaper Bild, which carried the photos, says they show German troops in Afghanistan in 2003.

On one of the pictures, a soldier is seen holding the skull next to his exposed penis, on another - soldiers pose with the skull on their jeep.

German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed disgust at the photos and said there would be full investigation.

The government will investigate the soldiers who played a role and act with full severity
    Chancellor Angela Merkel

Two possible suspects have already been identified and are being questioned, said army chief of staff General Wolfgang Schneiderhan.

One of suspects was still with the armed forces and the other had left the army, the general said.

"We all saw pictures today that are shocking, that are repugnant and that can be excused by nothing," Chancellor Merkel said.

"The government will investigate the soldiers who played a role and act with full severity," she added.

    'Criminal measures'

German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung pledged "disciplinary or even criminal measures" for those involved, if the story was confirmed.

"Anyone who behaves this way has no place in the Bundeswehr [German military]," he added.

The story was given wide coverage on German television on Wednesday.

"We can't use such people in our army," Bernhard Gertz, head of the main organisation representing German troops, said on ARD television channel.

"We must investigate exactly how such degeneration and misbehaviour can happen despite good training and good supervision," he added.

    Authenticity?

The Bild newspaper did not say how it had obtained the photographs, nor gave any proof of their authenticity.

It is not clear where the skull in the pictures came from, the newspaper admitted, adding that according to a military source it could have been taken from a mass grave.

Germany has about 2,800 troops stationed in Afghanistan within Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).

Unlike British, American and Canadian troops, who are fighting the Taleban in the south, the Germans are based in the relative calm of the capital Kabul and in the north of the country.

Last month, the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, voted to extend the mission of the German forces in Afghanistan until October next year because of the worsening security situation there.

Some troopers holding up a skull is no grounds for the
media's discussion of 'scope of German involvement'....

'Criminal charges'...??? This is an example of PC gone wild.

        Unless it was FG's

        *hides*

Seriously, the thing is IMO rather a display of stupidity. But otoh soldiers in that environment should be more responsible, since the action may be very well used by Taliban or AQ propaganda to point at the "crimes" of western troops. So I don't think it was a crime in our sense, but the guys shouldn't get away with it.

Well, holding a penis in one hand and a skull in another may seem kinky....
But it's just some immature joke, not anything to be outraged with. What's bad is that it may cause locals to think bad of international forces. And that's the only problem

Considering what the public owes to the defenders of their nation,
I think they should allow the troops off with a slap on the wrist
for being crude. But no severe punishment should happen.

Make them bury the skull and peel extra potatoes.

This is all a misunderstanding. You try being a soldier in a country where nobody speaks your language, see how long you go without a rebus photo you can hand to women to discreetly ask them to "give you some head."

I don't think this is a huge deal. Bad decision and bad taste, stupid joke? Absolutely.

                    But crime? What crime?!

But I bet the dude who was waving his penis with the skull is now feeling very embarrased about it, and there will be a full investigation

I mean it's bad enough to rob a candy store, but to be known as the guy who teabagged skulls?

There maybe some rules for military personnel abroad they violated....dunno, but I could imagine they get briefed before they are sent into such a region about correct behaviour, not doing certain things etc.....so while I agree it was probably done as a rather stupid joke they could face disciplinary consequences if it turns out they violated such rules....criminal measures seem way too much though (what crime would that be).

It's a comparatively harmless prank. They found the skull somewhere in the open (I don't believe for a moment, that they dug it out or even killed that person) and had their admittedly tasteless fun with it. I think curtsibling has it right, bury it and have the soldiers peel extra potatoes. The hypocrites, who raise a stink about this to gain political profile on the other hand belong chased out of office in shame (and shot, if I had my way, but I don't).

Hell, I remember when I lived in Prenzlau back in GDR times, we had for a year or two a big sandy plain behind our newly built appartment building (they brought normal soil and sewed grass only much later). I found human remains on a regular basis, when it was my turn cleaning. Ulnae, Radii, one time even a jawbone. All from WW2. My 7 years old son even brought a complete Panzerfaust home out of the sands. I decided not to throw it into the trashbin, but had the police carry it away. Had I raised a stink too and demanded to bury every goddamn bone with respect, they'd probably have thrown me in the mental home. (shame they didn't, right? )

wrt to the OP: The story shouldn't even make the papers, let alone a courtroom.

Tabloid sensationalism . I almost asked if they got the pictures from the Daily Mirror.

Well, after all it is the Bildzeitung.
It´s for one not the most trustworthy medium in germany (See Bildblog for a reference, they always list all of the errors or even intentional lies they can find in Bild (which generates tons of new material everyday )

And for the other they always tend to exaggerate thing, just to have something they can publish with large headlines to generate sales

Considering the reputation of Bild I wouldn´t be surprised if ,in a few days from now, it will come into light that the photos are staged and these aren´t real Bundeswehr soldiers, but just a group of theatre actors, playing Hamlet
