We played "monkey wars" at my elementary school, and that is where I learned that I was really strong and agile for my age. I always played with kids that were older than me in my neighborhood and thought I was slow and weak.
I remember walking with my best friend in 1st grade along the swing sets during recess when he got clocked in the head by one of those two-person swings (which I haven't seen in years btw). It fractured his skull and immediately his head was a mass of blood. I helped him up and guided him toward the playground monitor. She started toward us, but got woozy and almost passed out so we had to hoof it all the way across the playground. My friend was in the hospital for six months from that one. Perhaps this is why those two-person swings are not used anymore.
We played a lot of football, dodgeball, dodge snowball, kickball, soccer and "smear the queer". There were injuries requiring medical attention to be sure, but I'm also sure that the balance and strength and fitness that we learned and developed from these activities prevented a greater number of injuries and illnesses since then. We didn't have any obesity to speak of for instance, and knew how to take a fall. I wish kids today were allowed to experience the fun of being in a body to such an extent.
