the thing i wonder about though is how much schedule strength matters when you dont get results. would you really rank a team with the toughest schedule and 2-3 losses above a team with one loss and a medium schedule?
why is dan holding them (usc) only this high? he should put them #2 if he truly belives that strength of schedule matters more than actual record. i wont deny that sos is important but actual results are more so. where will he rank michigan if they lose to OSU? lower than USC.
a top 5 team wins the all their games or theyre supposed to by a good margin, keep the ones they lose close and certainly doesnt lose to unranked opponents.

BCS has them ranked appropriately. We need to win out to deserve a BCS bowl bid and the offense has been unreliable recently.
All the other teams with 1 loss have been unreliable at times as well.

of the ranked teams with 1 loss, which ones lost to an unranked opponent?
USC to Oregon State, 5-3
Boston College to NC State, 3-5
Texas A&M to Texas Tech, 5-4

Many teams played 12 regular season games in those years.
Maybe in 2002 and 2003. The NCAA didn't allow 12 games in years with 14 available Saturdays until 1999, however, so I don't see why you brought up 1995 and 1998...

My mistake. There were some teams that played 12 game schedules here and there before 2002, some years more than others, but it wasn't most teams. Mea culpa.

7 of 11 teams with winning records. No winless teams and no 1 win teams.
The top 2 positions in all human polls and the BSC are firmly held by two teams in the Big 10. #3 in the conference is low in the rankings (17, 17, 17 and 16 in BSC) is only that low becuase this is the first year with a new Head Coach. Easily top ten if Alveraz was still there.
A case can be made for the Big Ten as the best in the country.
Boston College gets screwed by the rankings. To have Clemson rated and them not, is ridiculous.
BC leads their conference, ahead of Clemson, whom they beat.

Apparently, it's all the rage these days. Same thing happened to Bunting at NC.
The one person that I expected to be fired mid-season was Coker. No word yet...

Here's a series of articles from Rivals that tries to determine which college programs are the best at producing NFL players at various positions. Very interesting, and not just because Nebraska is winner or runner-up in 6 out of 13 categories...
