At Least Eight Canes Suspended
Fallout from the Miami and Florida International brawl has begun: Hurricanes coach Larry Coker said at least eight of his players are suspended.

I see a lot of people here are talking about punishments for Miami, but no one is talking about it for FIU. I sense some kind of bias from that. As far as I'm concerned, these guys were fighting in PADS, and I haven't heard of any big injuries. The guy who was stomping on people's legs should be suspended for the year. Everyone is overreacting to the guy who hit someone with his helmet. He didn't even swing that hard, and he hit PADS, not someone's skull or something.

Still, take away their bowl game this year, and suspend several players for the year, but I'm sorry to say that I think everything above that is just taking this too far.

Sloww, Clemson put in their 3rd string defense against North Carolina for most of the 4th quarter, which is why that score ended up being 50-somethign to 7, instead of 50-ish to 0. Their backup QB got some time on the field, too, IIRC, and they took out Spiller (sp?), one of their best all around players, and they used their 3rd or 4th best RB for the 4th quarter. They had 40 at the half, I think. You obviously want your starters to keep getting good minutes, and see as many "defenses" (or lack thereof) as they can. Also, Will Proctor played behind Charlie Whitehurst up until now, and he needs to see minutes, IMHO.

1. OSU (thinking about going USC, Michigan, OSU due to strength of competition)
2. USC (toughest competition gets the props)
3. Michigan
4. Cal (tougher competition than TN, even though TN won the head-to-head)
5. Tennessee
6. Notre Dame (tough choice between ND, Auburn, and Fla, but ND's only loss is to #3)
7. Auburn (moves into the top 10)
8. Florida
9. Louisville (moves down due to weak competition)
10. Texas (stays same due to weak competition)

No bias here. I'm just going from what I saw in the video. I only saw Miami players using weapons and stomping people. I did see one FIU player take a big swing at someone's helmet, but that's all. And I also saw Miami celebrating a street fight after it was over. FIU did nothing of the kind.

Lieniancy on this (and yes I think 8 players being suspended is lieniant) will just perpetuate the matter. The NCAA should come down hard to show that they support football teams, not gangs.

A helmet isn't a weapon when it hits someone on the pads. An FIU player started the brawl, and one of them came out swinging crutches. I don't think that any "leniancy" will perpetuate anything. I mean, do you want to take bets on how many more brawls we'll see this year and next?

It was a nasty ordeal, but it's not the end of the world, and it shouldn't be punished as if it were.

I think it might have been the same FIU player who started it who was kicking some Miami player who was on the ground.

Later, Lou Holtz was talking about the Clemson - S. Carolina brawl. Both teams could have gone to a bowl game, but both didn't. Does anyone remember if that was an NCAA decision, or the schools?

Yeah... I read the article. I thought it was a Miami player that swung the crutch.

Who started it is irrelavant. What is relavant is that NOBODY stopped it.

And you are right, being leniant isn't going to do nothing. Coming down hard on these guys, both teams, will.

And sure, I'll take a bet about how many brawls happen next year. 4 by Miami, 1 by the rest of the league. They are a traveling gang sponsored by a college, not a football team.
