  • Arrian, I'm just sick of Fun, and other's, mouthy ignorance.
I notice it's a strawman when the facts come out.

    Typical.

    • You post facts, but the facts are not related to the thread topic.

You post that Iowa is a very white state. Um, ok. Factually correct. Meaning? Nothing.

You post that the KKK was a pervasive organization, with lots of members in the North. Factually correct. Meaning? Racism exists in all parts of the country. Duh, we all know that, and I cannot recall anyone denying it. What is the meaning w/regard to continued use of the Confed flag (the thread topic)? Very little.

You're just feeling pissy at some northerners and don't really have much of an argument, so you start throwing some **** at the wall to see if any sticks.

      • You're as big an ass as Fun. It has everything to do with the thread title and the turn it's taken, which I'm sure was a huge surprise to Fun.

Don't get pissy with me because Northern bigotry is exposed.

        • Actually, I could care less about said "exposure" because AFAIC, it wasn't hidden. It's a big DUH.

I'm just pointing out that your recently posted facts have no impact on the argument. They're just lashing out by someone who has nothing substantive to say.

          • Looking at the last several pages, Sloww, the argument has been about the Confederacy, and the question of whether the Civil War was primarily about slavery or not.

NOT an attack on today's South. Not unless you choose to believe that today's South = Confederacy. In which case...

            • Actually Arrian I'm a bit depressed about it all. I grew up born and bred up in yankee country. Love that area. Would go back in a heart beat if the conditions were right. All that being said my experiences show the continued slaps at the southern racism is more than a bit hypocritical considering self assured piety of the north.

I was one of those same self assured folk who were so convinced that the evil southerner deliverance types were crawling out of the woodwork. In retrospect and hindsight rural North east US is chock full of lilly white folk who talk about coloreds and ******s to this day without ever having the good fortune to actually deal with people of color. If anything the complete lack of racial homgeneity in the North East makes the situation more sustainable as opposed to the integration here in the south.

Go up North and a black man comes into town expect no one but no one to talk to him. Go down south and have a black man come into town, no big deal.

Seriously I am saddened because I don't see the situation changing up north anytime soon as people are heading out not in, so the likelihood of better integration in the north approaches nil.

AS for the inital issue that of the confederate flag, Being a northerner I think the whole flag thing stupid, but also realize people are allowed to be stupid and fly whatever flag they want. And no there are no parralels to the swasitka unless you want to say that slavery was akin to genocide. I'm not willing to go there.

Personally, I don't give a damn what's thought. It's only an illustration of ignornance.

You people go ahead and talk amongst yourselves. There's plenty of stupidity in the world. I don't need to focus on 1 group on 1 subject.

I could see how it might wear on people. Then again, personally I don't really view this as a North v. South issue. There are lots of northerners who have Confed flags and think it's cool for one reason or another.

As for the situation up here... my home town was much as you describe, absent the overt racism you mention. It was nearly all-white... one of my classmates was from the first black family to move in. Where I live now is different, as it's a decent sized town. My hometown had 6000 people in it. Well, technically my hometown has ~10 million people in it, but we moved out of NYC when I was 9 months old.

Anyway, attacks on the use of the Confed flag =! attacks on the South, IMO. Is that flag a symbol of racism or not? If it is, flying it is bad whether you're in Georgia or New Hampshire.

Agreed but you can certainly understand how a proud southerner like Slowwy might be used to expecting such a thing given Mr. Fun's penchant for tweaking him.

If you want independence, you can gain it through peaceful means or violent means. First you try the peaceful route, and if that doesn't work you must fight for your freedom. What, I suppose the American revolutionaries should have left all British installations intact out of respect for their property?

It's federal property, the federal government didn't give them to the states. Sorry.
Sorry, but you're wrong. Lincoln recognized the need to withdraw the federal presence from Fort Sumter because his Secretary of State had been promising exactly that.

Indeed. We do not live in a boolean universe. On the whole.

The writer/philosopher Robert Anton Wilson had his own word 'somebunall' (or something similar) - meaning 'some, but not all'.
