Drake, I think that's not it. Most older Finns who have roots there already, they are more conservative folks. Definitely Bush voters the majority of them. The ones who have immigrated more lately, I suspect they are more Democrats. But if you put them all together, I would assume there's more Republicans than Democrats. I mean, most old folks I've seen in there who are Finns or Finnish American, they are definitely the most flag waving and gun toting people you can imagine. Even in more liberal states.

But yeah, you would see larger contingents by the water, you don't see large communities so much in desert areas or areas with no water near. We don't like it so much. But the infiltration, that's for sure. No one knows about us or the threat they pose. No one. It's like 'oh those nice people? They never do anything. They are weird, yes, but they just .. with good core values and hard working people'. Well that's just a front.

They inforce the language there, creating new hybrid languages that no one else understands, including myself, and they do forget the real traditions and instead have their own what we don't even recognize. But it always ends up in nudity and general weirdness. So I say it's still ..

I mean they think they are supposed to do those things because 'they do it back in the old country'. We don't. They do and they invented those things.

And they will definitely be the ones in the front lines of any kind of religious war. 2 things they hate: communism and other religions. And they love the guns. And Bush.

I'm half serious though. Them old folks still speak the language and USUALLY their American wives or husbands do also. SO they force one of the most difficult language on everyone, language that is obsolete. And they must speak it all the time.

I know that in some areas, you can go to a store and basically live only speaking Finnish. And like most are Americans, but they understand enough to communicate, but that's some weird hybrid language, it's not even real Finnish so you are speaking some code language there that is forced upon everyone. So what you have is people who are proud of where they come from, so proud that they will just make up stuff and believe it. They want that, they want to feel the 'appreciation' of what they do.

Second thing, since they have come from different background and traditions, they pretty much also have learned the local things also, which means they blend in well, because they have come from outside so they have had to learn and not just ignore. That's why they are crazy, they have two identities, they are proud, and no one understands them, not Finns or Americans. So they are gun toting communist haters with weird traditions and language. No wonder they want their own country there. We won't take them back

By the way, I prolly shouldn't discuss about it but there was this dude who died like few years ago. They started talking about his life after his funeral, because most of it was top secret. He was working for the CIA during the cold war and right after the WWII. He fought in winter war in here, and moved to the US after that. So he had first hand experience on the Soviets doing war, proven himself and definitely ideologically against communism. He worked for the intelligence and did trips all the time. He was absolutely paranoid during the last years of his life. He truly believed he would still be on the hit list of KGB. You wouldn't want to play jokes on him, because he'd literally do something about it. He was, of course, a hero, but it was kind of sad how he had carried all the bad memories, for example he had whispered in his last days that he still can't get over the situation where he had to shoot one of our own in the war. Supposedly they were doing some ambushes and attacks on the SU troops with skis, meaning they'd have a combat mission to interrupt logistics and support in the deep end of the other side, so they'd get on skis and go during the dark night, round the perimeter and destroy it. So they'd get back and they would plant mines because the skis leave tracks on the snow so they'd come after you with dogs and stuff. So they would do all kinds of maneuvers to do fake tracks and mine all tracks. Something happened though and one got injured on the way back, so they had to leave him but they couldn't, so they waited to see, hundred meters away, how many they had tailing, and noticed it was too many and basically shot their friend from the distance so he wouldn't be taken. So after decades, these things troubled his mind and he couldn't talk about it. Kind of sad, really.

But yeah, there's still crazy old people there. I'd be worried

In Oregon my brother was looking to go to a Temple or Synogogue (I ahve seen both sorts of names) to get some experience of nonChristian religions (this was for his highschool religion course (he did his last 2 years of highschool at a private school, the highschool in the community we lived in sucked balls)). The were only a few in the state, and ~half of them in Portland (and I think it was only two in Portland). And these ones were only open like once a month or something.

Meanwhile, I see tons of Jews on UMD. I had many in my classes, as well as the ones I taught. Jewish holidays are an important consideration for when homework is asigned as well as tests, and Jewish groups are very active. Also, there are Jewish restaurantes arround.

I beleive there are less Jews in Newport News, but still, I have a Jewish Temple accross the street from where I live and a Synogogue a couple of miles down the road.

Eli, the thing with the Jews is that they are focused in cities for the most part, and it is hard to have enough people in an area to dominate the whole city...

Sorry to break the news, Pekka, but you are (sorta) wrong. While not a nationality, (pre-Israel anyway) there are jewish ethnicities. The Sephardi and Ashkenazi jews come to mind.

I'm sort of supriseed that there are no counties that have a plurality... Probably what would come close to it would be Long Island, but those have an Italian plurality. (no suprise anyway, I'm part Italian as well as German) There are a *ton* of Jews on Long Island. As well, New York City has the second largest amount of jews after Tel Aviv, about 1,750,000. NYC had a population of 8,104,079 in 2004, though, so it's no suprise that they arn't a plurality.

Hmm, and according to Wikipedia, New York State has a lot of counties which are high on the percentage-of-jews-of-total-population-of-counties list. Nassau is #5, proving my point.

the question is actually on national origin. So Jews respond as Russian, Austrian, German, etc. Now if you see a census tract in Manhattan with lots of people stating Russian national origin, its certainly "am shelanu". But in North Dakota, it certainly isnt. In say, Chicago, it could be, or not. But in the counties with the highest number of Jews, in New York city, and Sullivan county in the Catskills, the Jews are going to be divided up among multiple national origins, and wont show as the largest group. In any case, Im not sure there still is any one county where Jews would be the plurality by national origin, even if they were so grouped. Kings County NY used to be so, but perhaps not any more. In any case, for this census question, the Satmar Chassidim who live in Brooklyn probably answer "Hungarian", regular Jewish folks (plus recent FSU immigrants)probably put down Russian, some probably answer Polish or Austrian, the Syrian Jews of Ocean Parkway probably anwer Syrian, etc, - so the number of "Russian" origin is probably far less than the number of African or Italian origin.
