    • Let's not discuss standards of cleanliness here , shall we ? Because at about the time thatn almost every common citizen of Vijaynagar was having at least one bath a day ( and the Brahmins their religiously required three ) , Europeans thought they had it good if they could manage one bath a month .

      • I once played EU2 with Vijanagar. They had crappy leaders and even more crappy events.

        • Brandenburg/Prussia has great Leaders. I mostly play them for continental military action, and England/UK (or Dutch in scn) if I want to see more discovery and colonialization stuff

According to Eddie Izzard's 'Mongrel Nation' series, the word 'shampoo' comes from India, where the British first learned how to wash properly.

I'm not entirely convinced that we'd lost everything we learned from the Romans by the time it came to playing the role of Rome for ourselves, but if the lineage of that word can be confirmed, Mr Izzard may have a point.

I wish you wouldn't ask that question . It's a rather painful period from the Hindu viewpoint , where the last bastion of native Hinduism was obliterated .

The Muslim kingdoms came together came and wiped out Vijaynagar . But bathing is one Indian tradition we can be justly proud of - even the poorest of the poor and the dirtiest of the dirty wash themselves at least once a day in India .

This gives me an idea for a thread - how many times do you bathe a day ?

                          I. uh. I was totally kidding. I really don't care. But *shrug* if you'd like to get down on Muslims some more, I'd be happy to ask you about the origins of Hindu civilization.

A Muslim chap in Brighton actually:

In 1807 the Mahomeds moved to London, where he found employment with the Honourable Basil Cochrane, a Scottish nobleman who had made a fortune in India and now opened an establishment offering vapour bath therapy. Michael Fisher notes that 'Dean Mahomet apparently added to Cochrane's bath a practice that he would make famous in England as "shampooing" (therapeutic massage)'. The etymological derivation of the word 'shampoo', it is worth noting, is from the Hindi chhampo, imperative of chhampa, 'to press'.

But the fame lay in the future. From 1809 to 1812 Mahomed was a restaurateur; his 'Hindustanee Coffee House' at posh Portman Square offered Indian cuisine in an Indian ambience created with the help of cane furniture, hookahs and Oriental paintings. Though initially successful, the venture ended in Mahomed's bankruptcy.
