Over 200.000 Albanians may be expelled from Switzerland

    Tirana /22/09/ 12:03

More than 200.000 Albanians may be expelled from Switzerland if the country endorses the new immigration law, Tirana's dailies said.

Media in Tirana say the associations of Kosovo Albanians in Switzerland are deeply concerned amid initiatives on tougher immigration and asylum laws.

If the Swiss vote for the law on aliens and refugees, at least 200.000 Albanians from Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania may be forced out of the country.

Kosovo Albanian associations in Switzerland called on roughly 20.000 Albanians who had acquired Swiss citizenship to oppose the revised asylum law.

Several leftist parties and NGOs remained adamantly opposed to the draft-law, arguing that the law breaches human rights.

Swiss government reckons that current situation in the 21st century requires new regulations concerning aliens. The current law on foreign nationals entered into effect 70 years ago. /end/

If this is true, I wonder where they will go? There were 200,000 spaces vacated in Kosovo by the expulsion of non-Albanians there (interesting symetry) but I think some of those spots may have been taken by Tosks and Ghegs from Albania.

It also raises the question : what other nationalities face eviction from Switzerland?

Wow... after they aquired citizenship to send them back due to a change in asylum rules is really hard to defend. Are there no rules against ex post facto laws (I think this may qualify)?

Hm, not sure if I understand correctly - they expel those 200000, plus or incl. those which have citizenship? That's certainly bad.

Or does "called on roughly 20.000 Albanians who had acquired Swiss citizenship to oppose the revised asylum law" mean that they ask the guys which already are citizens to vote/speak up in favour of those which aren't and could be expelled?

To Imran - Do you read it that way? I take it the 20,000 (10% of total) with citizenship will be OK - the other 80% are possible SOL.

Only 20k acquired citizenship. The article doesn't mention whether they would be sent back with the other 200k, but I would assume not. (I could be wrong, of course.)

I suspect the article is highly exagerated and inaccurate. I will wait for a better news source then an unknown daily newspaper based out of Tirana, Albania.

I don't think they're throwing out those granted citizenship. They have the same illegal immigration problems that states bordering Mexico and Canada have.

I heard a similar report on Mother Corp radio (CBC) last night.

Not much better than the above source - but maybe a bit.

Well, if this story has any substance we can expect to read more about it in due course, and from sources other than a Macedonian, opps FYROMian, news agency.

                        mexico I get --

But on your canadian border I think that today it might be more of an emigration issue for you considering our hot economy . . . Can you spare a few tens of thousands of skilled tradespeople?

could you please link to a source citing the big problems that illegal immigration is causing in the US border states with Canada-- I know people tend to go across the border in both directions but I was curious as to the problems caused
