Let's change this, just a little.

Let's say the man was detained until police could arrive for attempting to steal a car. He looks the same as he does now, following the incident.
Be very careful, because you may be about to put more value on a car than on the rights of a parent to bring up their child.

That doesn't address, again, the maybes. Only the actual situation as it exists.

Bit of a flawed comparison, since there is nothing to suggest that this man was going to steal a child (Even if he wanted). Doubly flawed, because nor is there any reason whatsoever to suggest that anyone arguing against beating up people for sex crimes would in fact be in favour of beating up people for stealing property!

Exactly. The premise of this thread was not "Sweet! This guy was detained until the police arrived," but rather "Sweet! This guy got the crap beat out of him!"

Whether he was actually beaten to a pulp is besides the point (and I agree, the picture doesn't suggest he was); what I found disturbing was the fact that several of you were celebrating the beating of offenders by angry mobs.
