Not a bit. Thailand has periodic coups but nothing ever changes.

Something smells here. IIRC Taskin was recently reelected from his support in the poor countryside, but he was dispised by the urban middle class because of "alleged" corruption and the opposition who got thier support from the urban middle class basically started being distruptive even though Taskin won the election fair and square, forcing the High Court to declare the election invalid on a technicality in order to stop the crisis caused by the opposition.

Could the urban elites be behind the coup? The fact that the BBC was taken off the air make me even more suspicious that something fishy is going on.

Bill Maher was everywhere on the news when I turned the TV on to check this story out. I haven't seen anything on the news about Thailand coup. (Not saying its not happening - just where's the TV news on it? )

The military has surrounded the perimeter with the intent of putting the former king back in place...unless I'm misremembering. I don't think so though.

Absolutely. Thaksin's biggest crime was that he had the support of the majority of the population, but not the urban middle and upper class.

I always loved how the people in Bangkok would complain that he was abusing democracy by winning too many votes.

I believe the former King is dead, and his heir is the King now.

And your point? George Washington is dead, but we have a president.

And George Washington, despite his deadness, should be put back in place.

                                Thailand: All the king's men
                                By Shawn W Crispin

BANGKOK - As Thailand's military settles into its provisional authority role and awaits to see which prominent figure assumes the interim leadership role, for all intents and purposes His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has, through his army proxies, taken absolute control of the kingdom.

The military coup led by army commander General Sonthi Boonyaratklin that ousted caretaker prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday night has put Thailand back on a familiar

political course: under a royally endorsed interim government.

Images broadcast on national television of Sonthi meeting with King Bhumibol at his palace indicated overtly to the general population that the military's extra-constitutional move had the monarch's tacit approval.
