Ah, so basically the King used the army to increase his powers. My nitpick was that he's been in power for several decades; he wasn't former at any point.

Odin is right! Something fishy is going on...
Oh! I know! It's a military coup to overthrow the country's government! THAT's what was so fishy!
EDIT to remove "democratically elected." This was intended as a joke, not choosing sides. I have no opinion on the legitimacy/lack thereof of Thailand's past, present, or future government, I was just laughing at the idea of somebody looking at a military-led act of subversion and saying, apparently seriously, "Something fishy is going on here." This conspiracy isn't laying all its cards on the table!

Come to think of it, isn't Ming currently spending a lot of his time playing C4 Warlords or something instead of looking after poly?
Why do I ask? Oh, no reason...

As always (not the first coupThe military has surrounded the perimeter with the intent of putting the former king back in place...unless I'm misremembering. I don't think so though.
) the military seeks the protection and aproval of the king as without his aproval their efforts are doomed.
This is not a ploy to get the king back in power, he doesnt need to be formaly in power becouse even as a constitutional monarch he has more power then any Thai goverment will ever have.
Fact is that Thai people have an absolute love and loyalty to their king, comparable with how muslims feel about mohammed (PNVD).

This thread has been pretty forgiving to Thaksin. It's not just that the poor country-folk love him, it's that he wins them over by:
(A) Handing out meaningless cash from time to time, as atawa has stated, rather than addressing key economic or infrastructural problems.
(B) Controlling the state media.
Not to mention the fact that he seems to have rejigged tax laws so as to maximize the profits of his sale of Thai state TV to a Singaporean form.
Of course, I'm not defending the coup. Such drastic military action is not the answer. But let's not make Thaksin out to be much more than a low-grade thug."I wrote a song about dental floss but did anyone's teeth get cleaner?" -Frank Zappa

But let's not make Thaksin out to be much more than a low-grade thug.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

I'm sure the opposition would do the same thing except with handouts to the urban elites instead of handouts to the rural poor. Taksin isn't an angel, but I doubt the opposition are either.Originally posted by cinch
