      Apparently, I do.

What do you know about oil, other than that you live in Texas?

Do you even understand what bitumen is and how oil is extracted from it?

      • Just for fun.

Texas oil reserves (including federal reserves in the Gulf of Mexico): 4.6B barrels

Alberta oil reserves: 180B barrels (number is likely to rise, as it recently has again)

        Texas is child's play, Sloww.

        • Yeah, but Texas has a very long history of big oil.

Not that that has anything to do with the OP...

Edit: Also, its a small army of Texan oil tycoons in AB extracting all this stuff anyways.

          • Texas is the past, baby.

Their obviously poor education system is doing them in.

            • And it was Texans that helped Alberta develop its oil and gas industry in the first place.

Not sure why I seem to care so much, though...

              • I want to point out that the 4 canadians soldier who got killed yesterday were in fact, giving candy and talking with children when the suicide bombers came up. (Edit: As read in La Presse, Montreal Newspaper)

Killing/injuring the canadians and the children!!

                That's really sad....

                • 37 Canadians killed since 2002

With the latest deaths, 36 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have been killed since the Canadian mission to the country began in 2002.

"The Taliban is a bunch of cowards," Fraser told reporters in Kandahar. "The Taliban continue to attack this country. They continue to attack the people. They attacked children today. That's about as cowardly as you can get." Fraser said the troops had been on patrol and were helping Afghan forces to provide a secure environment so that people could return to their homes after a military operation in the area

                    Develop the industry? Christ.

The resources are there, the industries sprout up all around it. The industry would be developed if the American companies invested in it or not.

I don't know why you care so much either, it's just a little bit disturbing.

In a conflict in which the deaths are so few I dont think it means much that comparatively canadians die 6 times more often than USA americans

                        • The problem, BP, is that political parties in Canada are trying to make hay with the issue. That is made worse by what is being reported about other NATO allies.

It is being reported that the Germans (with ~3000 troops) are refusing to move out of the relative safety of Kabul. I don't necessarily believe everything that is being reported, but there does seem to be a determined campaign underway to undermine our determination to support the NATO alliance and the government in Kabul.

It could get increasingly difficult for the government to support keeping our troops over there. If the Liberals do a total about face and call for a pull-out, Harper will be in a very difficult position.

Asher, you are trying to get smart about something which I believe you likely are not entirely clear on.

It's a lot more advanced than geologists need to know.

As the son of somebody who's been working on the stuff since 1979 and the SO of a chemical engineer working in the field on the processes, I do have some understanding of how the process works.

I also understand that geologists are not involved after the very very early stages. And they don't get paid much relative to the other people.

Now compare the recoverable reserves. Yes, Alberta has a very large amount of oil and that's a good thing but Alberta also has a problem in that most of its reserves are difficult to get to due to the nature of the geology and the relative immaturity of the hydrocarbons themselves.
