I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • According to Sagarin, Purdue has the 154th toughest schedule in the NCAA so far. It's amazing that the Big Ten lets them do that.

      • Iowa at 5? Maybe if they can beat Ohio State this weekend...

        • Sagarin has their strength of schedule so far at #49. Not high, but not low either. My lower-ranked unbeatens have had lesser schedules so far.

I'll have to adjust after this week. Using my criteria, you can't automatically move somebody up in the ranking if they win. F.e., Notre Dame has played the toughest competition so far. But the next several weeks are not tough competition.

It's kind of silly using strength of schedule this early in the season. Especially seeing as how Iowa has played against two of the worst teams in 1-A (Syracuse and Illinois) and barely beat one of them (Syracuse... though Tate was ill for that one). They also played a 1-AA team in their first game of the season. The other game was Iowa State, which is a mid level Big XII team.

If they beat OSU, they deserve to be in the Top 10; otherwise, they've looked unimpressive.

            • You say that it's silly to use strength of schedule so early, but then you go on to evaluate the strength of schedule. Admittedly, Iowa's schedule hasn't been tough. But Auburn's, Georgia's and Louisville's schedules haven't been tough either.

              • I was pointing out WHY it was silly to use strength of schedule so early by showing who teams are playing against early in the season. Until they reach their conference, most teams do not schedule hard out of conference teams early on in the season.

I just think Iowa at 5 is bizzare, especially if you are relying on Sagarin's SOS ratings, then perhaps some 3-1 teams (such as Cal or Tennessee) would be better served in that spot that a 4-0 team with a far worse SOS rating. Especially when I see that TCU has a similar SOS to Iowa (51st compared to 49th) and an undefeated record and don't even appear on the Top 10.

                • The TCU criticism is fair. Any others that you notice?

To be sure, the problem is with Georgia's weak schedule so far. It's hard not to put them in the top 10 -- even with the Colorado near loss -- which is where the dilemma comes in.

                  • If you are just going by SOS, Georgia is bad, IMO. It'll get better in the SEC, but it isn't there yet. I'd put West Virginia in over them, who does have a low SOS, but it is better than Georgia's.

I just really disagreed with Iowa being so high, but that's why we have the poll thing, to spur debate and conversation .

                    • The problem is that these folks are all playing patsies early and coasting in the early rankings based on their reputation. Why should I credit teams for games that shouldn't have been played in the first place? Great, you're 4-0.

It's a shame that this is somewhat an exercise of judging who has played the tougher patsies.

Regarding TCU, they have only played 3 games. Maybe if they win next week, I'll put them in (cheap excuse, I know). I will move Georgia out of the top 10, if there is a suitable replacement at #10.

                      • I have listened to your pleas, and have decided that Georgia should be removed from my top 10. I have inserted Tennessee at #9.

                              • Why does the MSU program want to dwell on this defeat? Don't they have anything better to do, like prepare for their next game?

By the way, I saw the Weis press conference on Sunday (wrapping up the MSU game) and he didn't accuse anybody on MSU of slapping him. Rather, he said that there was potential for the situation to get out of hand and chaos to ensue, as evidenced by him getting slapped.

Who slapped Weis? Tape doesn't show

                                Associated Press Writer

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State officials said Monday they are sending a tape to the Big Ten Conference related to a call referees made during last week's 40-37 loss to No. 12 Notre Dame.

Michigan State said the tape was made because Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said he was slapped during a second-quarter incident on the sidelines. It began when Notre Dame safety Chinedum Ndukwe was flagged for a hit on Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton as he ran out of bounds.

Michigan State receiver Matt Trannon jumped into the resulting skirmish on the Notre Dame sideline and was flagged for a personal foul.

A tape of the incident was shown to reporters attending Michigan State coach John L. Smith's weekly news conference. The video shown to the media does not show Weis being struck by anyone connected with Michigan State. It does show Weis on the field yelling at officials while they sorted out the calls on the play.

"I'm not going to contend that anybody is lying, but you take a look at the film," Smith said.

Weis hasn't said who slapped him -- or even what team he's from. Notre Dame senior associate athletic director John Heisler said Monday that Weis doesn't know who did it.

"It might have been one of my guys that slapped me, for all I know," Weis said Sunday.

Smith said he was upset with the call against Michigan State, whose players were coming over to protect Stanton, he said.

Michigan State led 17-7 at the time.

Michigan State associate athletic director John Lewandowski said the tape was sent to the Big Ten because the Spartans believe the situation was "mismanaged."
