No, but I'm impressed. I had to look that one up.

    • Another hint: the man committing suicide is very famous, but his death is not.

His life ended with a whimper rather than a roar.

      • So he was literally oppressed by fortune, not by fate... I'd say Crassus drinking a bowl of melted gold, but that was after Mithridates. I'll think about it.

You're reading too much into it. I meant the person on the coin, not the coin itself.

            • Oh, it's the suicide of Hannibal.

That last clue pretty much gave it.

That was actually a clever puzzle: someone everybody knows, but whose death has been forgotten.

After the Battle of Zama which ended the Second Punic War, Hannibal was allowed to live in peace for a few years. Roman authorities then demanded his surrender due to their fears of resurgent Carthaginian militarism. Hannibal entered exile and fought for several enemies of Rome with mixed success over the course of a decade before having to face the virtual certainty of his capture by Roman forces. At a small town in what is now Western Turkey he drank poison and ended his own life, 20 years after he had ceased to be an important figure in world history.

The flag of the defunct Republic of Biafra. I wasn't sure, so I had to double-check online. That was a hard one.
