I thought it had to do with the submission to the Persian king, with the ritual 'gifts' of earth and water, but I can't think who the man is who is emptying the bowl, nor where it's occurring- he's dressed in Assyrian or Median costume as far as I can tell...Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

I stumped Molly? Well this is never going to happen again. You're on the right track. Here's a hint: the individual depicted here is not paying tribute to a king.Originally posted by molly bloom

Well, it has to do with conquering a city, yes. But not the one that the central individual is located at in the picture.Originally posted by Cartimandua
This is a hard one...does it have anything to do with conquering the city? The Apolytoner formerly known as Alexander01

Well, this seems to be beyond my historical expertise, and since no one else is responding I would assume they are lost as well. On the risk of losing what little pride I have left, can you give us another hint?Originally posted by Alexander I

Okay, big hint: this event took place prior to 600 B.C., did not happen in Persia, and the "gift" the man is giving is not an item of any real intrinsic value. How's that?
Nope. Nice try.Originally posted by Will9

The guy in the center looks like he's holding grain...so I was going to guess that it's Jacob's brothers come to get grain from Egypt.

Nope. As far as I know, the event depicted is entirely non-Biblical.Originally posted by Zkribbler

And I assume you meant Joseph's brothers getting grain in Egypt, and what does that have to do with conquering a city?

No, I must disagree with you and say that the man in the center looks very middle eastern, specifically Persian, Babylonian, or Assyrian, as do all the other men in the picture.Originally posted by Eli
