I believe when they are shown now they are back to being Ninja's. We often have little media storms over these sort of these things. I seem to remeber some people thought the A team was too violent. So yes we are a little daft sometimes.

ONTOH, We don't get in a hissy fit over the exposure of one nipple.

Editing out smoking from old cartoons. Sounds like something out of "1984," a particularly British dystopia. Anything we are opposed to now, we will edit from the past as well. THIS is a good model for our children.

I remember when I saw a censored version of the classic Hunting Season, where Elmer Fudd keeps shooting Daffy Duck. In the censored version they cut out the actual shooting, and it would jump to Daffy having his beak askew, or blown off, etc. - but it totally ruined the comedy!

Also, it ruins the Road Runner cartoons if you take out the "violence."

I guess people who want to censor those cartoons are stupider than I was as a kid.

I don't think they show any of those cartoons here in America either. It's not just the brits that want to get rid of smoking in cartoons. Quite a few things in the the old cartoons have been edited.

I just watched the recent Simspons DVD and they kept commenting that they couldn't show a naked butt on screen anymore. The old ones still show in syndication but they can't make a new one with a bare ass.

What's fun is to watch cartoons and look at comics and try to see if they added to color to female characters to cover up more than the creator intended. I know there are some anime shows that have bathing suits and the like added and it's not uncommon in comics for some skin to be colored to look like spandex or some other skin tight material.

Cartoons which are not meant for children - i.e. those in prime time slots or later - can deal with a lot more adult material than the ones shown at 9 am.

I'm fairly certain that there are old Warner Bros. cartoons are either edited when shown or not shown at all. I'm not just talking about the crazy WW2 and Dixie ones either.

The older warner brother cartoon appealed to all ages.
Back then, the stuff that was inapproriate for kids wasn't considered a problem because the kids just didn't get it so they ignored that part of it. Of course it's obvious to an adult so in modern times the wussification of the world continues.
