  • Tom & Jerry smoking scenes to be cut after complaint

Yes, sir. All our smoking addictions are traced back to Tom and Jerry.
What about John Wayne? Bogey? Ricky Ricardo? Dean Martin?

LONDON (Reuters) - They chase each other at high speed wielding axes and hammers. But the famous cartoon duo of Tom and Jerry are in trouble in Britain for smoking on screen.
A channel airing the cartoons has agreed to cut scenes that glamorize smoking after British media regulator Ofcom received a complaint from a viewer who took offence at two episodes.

In the first, "Texas Tom," the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking it with one hand. In the second, "Tennis Chumps," Tom's opponent in a match smokes a large cigar.

In a bulletin posted online, Ofcom noted "concerns that smoking on television may normalize smoking," and said that the Turner company, licensee for Boomerang which aired the cartoons, had agreed to edit some smoking scenes out of Tom and Jerry.

"The licensee has ... proposed editing any scenes or references in the series where smoking appeared to be condoned, acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation," Ofcom said, adding that "Texas Tom" was one such example.

But it would not cut all smoking scenes, it added.

Ofcom said it recognized smoking was more generally accepted when cartoons were produced in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, but noted that the threshold for including such scenes when the audience is predominately young should be high.

The Belgian cartoonist Maurice de Bevere replaced his famous creation Lucky Luke's ubiquitous cigarette with a blade of grass, winning him official recognition from the
    World Health Organization in 1988.

Bah, they should ban the whole thing. Tom and Jerry is crap. Itchy and Scratchy are far more entertaining.

and it's funny how they don't complain about the senseless violence in that cartoon.

I grew up with Tom and Jerry.

Here's where you guys can call me a weenie. I liked the episodes when they worked together over the ones where they fought.

This is nowhere near the Janet Jackson boob furore, though.

Popeye has always been one of my favorite cartoons, not least because it seems to have lulled the censors to sleep for generations. My observations:

He swears constantly under his breath, especially in the older versions of the cartoon.

He smokes a pipe, and can ingest a certain green plant material that gives him a real boost through the pipe.

His girlfriend has a baby, but is unmarried. She is constantly persued by sailors. I wonder how she earns her keep?

The violence is on par with a lot of cartoons, which is to say that there is a ton of it. Where Popeye is more disturbing (realistic in a way) is the sexual / relationship violence between Olive Oyle and Bluto. He's always seemingly trying to take her somewhere to rape her, or when it has a "mellower" vibe he's simply an abusive, violent stalker type.

Oh, and censorship sucks. They still showed the racist Looney-Tunes when I was a kid and it was a real eye-opener for me. Contrary to the fears that it would indoctrinate kids with racist opinions it made me more aware of the recent racist past in this country.
