Normally I would approve of that threadjack, but this thread is irrational enough without that bit of emotional baggage added on. So please don't.

Is depression a disease? Is it more prevalent today?

That's not the bloody point. Of course schizophrenia and depression are distinct (though your statements are laughable; there are plenty of mild schizophrenics who can control themselves, much as depression comes in varying degrees of severity). My point is that "cavemen" would not have stood for either. We're talking about people who may well have practiced infanticide as a form of population control.
I mean, do you think Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is a disease?
Used to be called "rage issues", now, it's a disease.
What about Societal Anxiety Disorder? (SAD)
Used to be called shyness, now, it's a disease.
Oh, and bipolar.. classic. Everything about being human, also seems to be a symptom of bipolar... "somedays you are really happy, and somedays you are really depressed" When are you cured? When you are eternally bored?
OCD.... it used to be people couldn't walk through doorways, or would spend hours washing their hands, would be diagnosed as OCD, now, if you put your black socks on one side, and your whites on the other... you might be OCD!!!
It's madness!

It is not the worst proposition, it is the best, because it puts the power back into the hands of the person causing the depression, themselves!
But not themselves... hell no, not themselves, that would be the worst propostion ever. You would rather they believe in anything, but themselves. And I am the bad guy.
because people with depression DONT ****ING BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES!!! people with depression dont see a way out. you saying "only you can help yourself" is not putting power back in the hands of anyone. its a platitude that doesnt mean anything to anyone who doesnt value themselves. someone who doesnt believe in themselves. youre offering conclusions and answers without any work or explination.
you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink. a horse can know its thirsty but might not know how to drink cause its been so long since it had one. hell it might not even like water, it might be holding out for a bloody mary. point is, sometimes you have to give the horse a swift kick, a pill, horse therapy, a good long ride in the country, to convince it that its time to drink.
also whether or not something is classified as a disease doesnt make it any less real does it? people with rage or IED are still *******s you dont want to know. but instead of just trumping it up to rage issues, now we can start looking into ways to help that person with IED.
instead of people just being shy, we can find ways to combat SAD.
furthermore you know nothing about bi polar disease. nothing. if you had actually known anyone that had a break youd see its not "im up, im down". if you actually had a personal relationship with someone with bi polar disorder youd stop talking out your ass.
youre living in the past and longing for the past and the past wasnt this rosy picture where people just dealt with it.
also youre under the impression that self diagnosis is the final diagnosis. anyone worth their medical degree doesnt give carte blanche to self diagnosed patients."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

also why is it hard to seperate medical conditions from distaste from drug companies? i dont like all the cholesterol ads or drugs out becuase i think there are more rewarding ways of lowering it, but I dont catergorically deny the exsistance of cholesterol."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

And over time, this addiction has caused damage to her heart or arteries, and it is now a disease.
Once again, not the same as depression. One can be diagnosed through various instruments, and one is diagnosed through surveys and interviews, very reliant on the patients perception.

Nowhere did I condone parents calling their child a whiny crybaby after he commits suicide.
Just another appeal to emotion instead of facts.
