I lived in Maryland for awhile. It tickled me that some of my patients had distinctly southern accents, while others had accents resembling a Philadelphian's accent.

I'm willing to bet that if you polled native white texans most would consider themselves southerners.

No, I disagree. Once you get north of Palm Beach, yer gettin' inta cracker country. Also when you go west of Loxihatchee. The strip all along the Glades is pretty redneck. Orlando is a blend, and the rest of the peninsula is to varrying degrees. South of Tampa being moer Norterhn, north of Tampa being more Southern, Daytona being solid cracker country.

I lived in Orlando for over a year. It definately isn't southern. It's just a tourist town. I've been to Jacksonville. I guess it's south, but it's such a big city, it has a bid city mentality. So you don't find a lot of small town redneck stuff there. Ft. lauderdale definately didn't seem southern. though I mostly only saw the strip clubs there. I don't remember Tampa much, even though I've been there. I saw a concert in Lakeland once. didn't really bother to notice the town much.

In any case. southerners are pussies. Real men come from the southwest.

The rural areas may southern all the way down to the glades( though IIUC its historically different from much of the rest of the South, having largely been settled after slavery was abolished, etc), but most of the population isnt rural. Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater is mainly Yankee. I never made it to south of Tampa - had a good friend from Sarasota, and my impression from her was that Sarasota was, if not Yankee, not cracker by any means - more blue collar Bradenton may have been different. Daytona was mixed in my experience - of course red necks like to vacation there, and some southern retirees I suppose, but i ran into yankees there and in Deland, and my impression was that many of the retirees there were northern.

One confusion of course is the flip side of our discussion - people seem to think everyone in Florida is either New Yorker, a Cuban, or a Florida or Georgia cracker. I knew a bunch of Kentuckians in Jacksonville (cause of my work) and some Marylanders - they were far from crackers, but not really "yankees". Similarly at least some people from the butternut lower midwest.

                    Jax guessing game for guev:

After 6 months in Jax, I moved to an apt complex where id feel a tad less like a fish out of water. One of my cowokers, who was helping me move said on seeing it "damn, this IS a Yankee apt complex"

What apt complex was it? (ill forgive you if youve never heard of it, but i bet you have)

England is traitorous to Roman Empire if you want to start down that road.

Actually, no. England didn't exist until the Angles teamed up with the Saxons and invaded. The Roman Empire had already pulled out by this point and was busy collapsing.
