What's a southerner?

A newsguy name Garreau his written a book called The Nine Nations of North America. He divides the continent up into nine "nations" according to their psychology.

Dallas is where three of the nations come together. East of Dallas is "Dixie," what were traditionally call the southern states. North of Dallas is "The Heatland," the Great Plains states, extending up into Canada. West of Dallas is "MexAmerica," what have been traditionally called the western states.

Florida is also part of "Dixie," except for its southern tip, which is part of "The Islands." With its large Carribean population and serving as a gateway to Latin America, it has more of an island mentality than a Dixie mentality.

Garreau oversimplified Florida. The I4 corridor, Tampa to Orlando to Daytona, isnt "islands" OR "dixie" - its very American - its more like the suburbs of Chicago with palm trees, except with some Atlanta, some Pittsburgh, thrown in for good measure. Of course that violates Garreau's thesis, which is that the 3 traditional nations of NA are less important than his "nine nations".

wrt to So Fl as the "islands" - I would also respectfully sugget that there is nowhere else in the "islands" where it is as easy to find a Kosher dairy restaurant

I would modify Sloww's map to only include states which were part of the Confederacy.

(though yes, Miami jews are mainly New Yorkers. And the Jewish community in Jax was alot more Yankee than the general population was, though there were quite a few folks I knew there who were VERY southern)

Nah, St Marys county Maryland is southern. To some degree Menckens "transchoptankia", ie the lower eastern shore, (Ocean City excluded) is southern.

The Hampden neighborhood in Baltimore is almost southern, though thats more West Virginia folks. They, plus the roots of the city, tend to give working class Balt neighborhoods a slightly more southern feel than other ethnic white neighborhoods in northern cities.

There may still be a few pockets of old WASP Baltimore that arent quite Yankee.

My impression is that large parts of Missouri are quite southern.

The border states are by definition a border area. A transition from southern to northern.

You can draw a line across Florida just north of Orlando, with a zig north on the Atlantic coast to just south of Jacksonville to divide the state between the "southern" north and "retirement village/amusement park land/latin immigration zone" south. Of course, there are pockets here and there that violate that, but for the most part it holds in my experience.

yeah, but within the border states some counties are definitely southern.

And theres transition in ex-confed states as well.

I live in Northern Virginia, and id respectfully say its less southern than Southern Maryland or the Lower Eastern Shore, and hardly more southern than Baltimore or its suburbs.
