I recall when former Heavyweight Champion (and former neighbor ) Riddick Bowe joined the Marines. Despite his formidable physical abilities, he didn't make it even part way through basic training. I have alot of respect for any Marine, they are all champions in my eyes.

"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

It is more of a mental than a physical thing. The PT is basically just another method of stressing the recruit (as well as get them fit), and it is basically proving to the recruit that yes they can endure three months of day in day out stress and pressure. It builds confindence and pride.
You can also learn a hell of alot more this way in a short amount of time. The sand pit is very motivating..."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

Physical training also serves the purpose of weeding out the people who really don't want to be there. If you cant suck up a little sweat and pain when it is just for training then how can you be expected to do so when it matters?"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights.
