    But can they spell ?

I do find the idea of your comparing 'Southerners' with Kurds quite funny.

The Kurds have several thousands of years of history to look back on.

The common use of nationality is that as a legal concept, linking a person to a sovereign state. If customs asks a Kurd what nationality he is he'll have to respond he's Turkish (or Iranian or Syrian...). The Kurdish state does not legally exist hence there's no Kurdish nationality.
If you want to make a poll to ask people how many cultures or ethicities their home places have, by all means go ahead.

as well as all the home nations being represented we've got portuguese, polish and a few other eastern european, immigrant workers. we've got a turkish kebab man, chinese, italian and indian restaurants. a couple of the local farmers have imported mail order brides from the far east and there's a very nice korean lady who works in the pharmacy. there's also some black dude from one the caribbean islands, but i forget which.

you never really think about it, but there are quite a lot considering it's a pretty small town in rural somerset.

Humm...let me count the nationalities in Vopnafjordur. Icelandic(naturally), several Danes, one Swede that I know about and one finnish woman. A total of...four.

Depends on the continent, actually. In North America, ethnicity is the usual subject of polite discussion. It's also what the census asks for -- not the country of birth. Citizenship rarely comes up. I imagine that Kurds would introduce themselves as Kurds.

                              Colon,
The 200 + option is invalid if you wished the answer restricted to legal nationalities. There are right around 150 of those, depending on who is recognizing whom at the moment. I'll stick with my original response, 200 +, although there are fewer embassied nationalities than that.

Also quite a few people were born in countries that no longer exist, whose borders have moved, or that have changed their names. Also folks regard themselves as nationals of states that do not exist. (Then consider the native tribes in their homelands and reservations -- a sub-category of nations.)
