Missing in the conversion is the mpg of whatever is being used as a comparison.1 cent a mile would make it $1.35/gallon equivalent.
Let's use my civic. I get 30-32mpg commuting. Gas here costs ~$3.20/gallon.
10 gallons ($32) gets me 300-320 miles... which is roughly 10 cents per mile, no?

That's right. I was backing out the ~4x efficiency of the electric car.

They use an AC induction motor for the powertrain, which was invented about a century ago by Tesla.
