Bush vetoed his first bill ever today.
This part amazes me the most.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

So first off, non Americans shouldn't be bothered. They can ask their governments to fund this research with their taxes.
Happy to do so.
Taxes being spent wisely is not that often an occurence.

The real choice is that there are other much better options, if you can't look after these kids you can give them to someone else who would rather look after them then give them up for experimentation. I can't see why this would be considered a bad solution.
You mean there's no kid anywhere at the moment, that could need some help, you need more of them?

This man is officially a god damn idiot. I have met people opposed to stem cells. I can gauruntee you, all of them would change there tune if they were stricken with Multiple Sclerosis or ALS. I know they would
I serouisly hope he gets parkinsons or something and he's doing a 20/20 in a decade regretting this veto. This man is a total tool of the Christian Right on this issue and he is standing in the way of science. This could be the biggest thing since antibiotics.
Thank god California, Canada and Europe are all full steam ahead.
I don't agree with Bush on this, but it's hard to see why some of you are so outraged. This veto didn't come out of left field; Bush made his position on stem-cell research pretty clear several years ago, a position that is hardly a radical one.
True, but it is still disappointing.
The good news is several states, notably California with several billion dollars, have stepped in to fill the void left by the restriction of federal funds. Progress has been slowed but not stopped.

This really must be a wedge issue if even dyed in the wool right wingers like Faded Glory are disagreeing on it.

Yes. It really is. Democrats could really drag us across the hot pavement with issue.
On one hand
People who are in no way impacted from these diseases, have no idea what its like to slowly be paralyzed by M.S. or have there body held hostage by Huntingtons. I have seen it. It isnt ****in cool.
The science is sound. Turn stem cells into other cells. In the future, repairing a heart will be as simple as soldering a wire. A tube of stem cells and swab. How wonderful would that be?
Stem cells have potential to cure just about every ****in disease known to man. Almost every nation on earth has gone ahead in the science. And he thinks he can still keep the 'bat in the box'.
My politics a side, my vision on this matter is colored by the fact that my grandfather died very slowly of Parkinson's disease. That my father is there for a carrier of that disease, and that I or my sister may have the gene for that disease (not to mention her three children).
Then you get to read about the real promising reseach for just about every cronic condition under the sun, from nerve cell damage to childhood diabetes, which could also be curried by stem cell research. Stem cells hold the promise to replace every cell in the body so they could be used to replace every cell in the body if we knew how to do it. We need lots more reseach in this because it just might become the mythical cure for cancer as well as just about every other human alement.
It isnt just 'talk'. Studies have been underway since 2000 that prove stem cells are a magic bullet. That they do work. Paralysed mice regain movement.
The trials in humans are having amazing results. In 20 years we will start seeing stem cells affect us more and more.

Umm, I know people who would die for their beleifs.. you don't?
Bush isn't much of a tool of the religious right, otherwise he would have done more about abortion/etc. He just gives them enough to keep them voting republican.

perhaps you should tell those kids they are standing in the way of science. . . .
Not true. He was surrounded by embros which had been "adopted". That is embros which had been given by their legal owner to someone who couldn't have a child. The embroes we are taking about are the some 90% of IVF embros who end up dumped in a garbage can because the parents got the child they wanted and didn't want to spend the money on having more $100,000 babies.
Further more an embro is not a life form. It has the possibility of becoming a life form but some 75% never do even in the best of times.
