Anyone seen it already? It's easy to see why this movie (will) takes a lot of flak from history buffs and fans of political thrillers, since its approach is very unusual compared to most pictures in the genre. I doesn't attempt to present a comprehensive account of the political going-ons in the time-period (from her marriage with Louis XVI to the French revolution), with the characters almost as pieces of decorum, rather it puts focus straight to how she experienced things: as that of an adolescent unable to deal with responsibilities she was burdened with. The movie doesn't present the main characters (Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI) as particularly good or bad persons, or as masterminds or as idiots, but simply as human beings. It's a beautiful movie and a very refreshing change of tack from most rigid and facts-obsessed historical movies. If you liked Oliver Stone's Nixon and Coppola's previous movie, Lost In Translation, you'll probably like this one too.

Let them see ass!I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Though the concept sounds really good. I'll be sure to check it out (sees Netflix queue at 60)... errr, sometime.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

It really is good, as long you're willing to forget about historical anal-retentiveness for a moment and consider the characters as beings of flesh and blood, with their strengths and weaknesses. Like in "Nixon" (as already mentioned) but featuring in a cocoon environment.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui

Marie-Antoinette was scum, and any film that despicts her even in a slightly positive light doesn't deserve to get watched."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident
"I never had the need to have a boner." -- Dissident
"I have never cut off my penis when I was upset over a girl." -- Dis

Spiff: Unfortunately, Colon is a royalist. I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Of course I prefer the real character: Didn't I just say that Coppola's depiction of Marie-Antoinette was an abomination?Originally posted by Brachy-Pride

I agree with Spiffor... what is this with putting French people in a good light?!“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
