I don't think Adama's rank is that important, when I think of "scifi captains" I think of the guys who command a ship. Adama is the captain of the Galactica, even though his rank is Commander.

By "Post Captain" do you mean the CO of a ship is called captain, even if that's not his rank? He's never called captain in the show. And technically in the Colonial Fleet this would be a demotion for him.
